[red] I am thinking about getting another Reel with a Line Counter. Does anyone have a Personal preference? Just looking to get some insight.[/red]

Hey Dan, i have been using the Okuma Magda Pro's for a year now and have absolutely no complaints. They were about $35. There are 3 sizes to choose from and they hold alot of line. I think Petty uses them too and he has said nothing bad about them either. My 2 cents.

P.s. They helped Yper and myself and Lil'Lunkerhunter bang the cats at willard today.[cool]

[red] The Diawa's and the Okuma's are the ones that I have been looking at. I have a Diawa Sealine 47 with the LC and I really like it, thats why I thought that I might put some feelers on what you guys would get.[/red]
[#ff0000] I think Petty uses the Okuma Mag20 on his trolling rods and he does seem to like them.[/#ff0000]

I use line counters almost all the time any more.Right now I'am using okuma's 15's for kokes.I also use a okuma mag 30 when trolling for the big boys.I think that for the price they are a good reel. The drag is fairly smooth, and when in clicker mode its not as annoying as a penn reel is.It nice to know exactly how far out your lure really is.

I also use both the Diawa and the Okuma LC's and both work great. A professional walleye fisherman I know in the mid-west said that the Okuma had problems handling leaded line. He said the drag had issues after a few months of use. He pretty much said the Daiwa LC was his reel of choice.

Just make sure the drag on any reel you buy is smooth from full tight to full loose.

I have one of the Cabelas linecounters. I would not recomend it. Everything about it seems cheap. They just came out with an Ambassedur line counter. I have several of those reels and they work great.

I too have a Cabela's line counter. I disagree with jackonlaker on the make of the reel. Mine is not the "gold" model, just the regular model. I've used it for about 5 years (hard) and love it. Nary a problem. I've dropped it etc. and it is still in one piece and not broken. I would buy another in a heart beat!

Reels never measure accurately. I use one of those line counters you attach to the pole. They are cheap and you actually know how much line you have out...

I have an Okuma, I have had it for a year now and have no complants.

[black]Hey AFDan52,[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]I have had Okumas for a number of years. 1 Mag30 pro, 4 Mag20 pros. I have had great service from them and no problems at all. The drag is smooth and the reel is easy to use and adjust. It has a clicker and that also works well (just make sure you turn it off as you reel in the line). As far as power goes, I have not caught anything over 30 lbs. with any one of them yet, so maybe one of our salt water anglers can chime in on that aspect.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]I use them for trolling, jigging, and drift fishing. [/black]
[black][/black]
[black]As was mentioned, the line counters themselves are not terribly accurate, but as long as you know that up front, you can still get a relatively good idea of how much line is out. [/black]
[black][/black]
[black]When I got each of mine, I loaded each with the same diameter/same manufacturer line (Trilene XT 10 lb.) and, I took them out in the back yard and put them up against a 100 foot tape measure and got a reading on the difference between the line counter read out and the actuall distance on the tape (I wrote it down as a plus or minus figure on the reel itself). None of the reels read the same on the line counter, and none of them were right on with the tape measure. [/black]
[black][/black]
[black]I also used one of those berkley snap on line counters for comparison. It was also not accurate and did not agree with any of the reels or my tape measure.[/black]

[red] I was going to ask about the counter accuracy on the line counters, now I know what to look for. Thanks guys you have been a lot of help.[/red]

I would not recommend the cabela's reels. I had one that lasted barely 2 years fishing for trout and another one that was bigger lasted less than half a season. The main problem I had was they would start to reel backwards and the little latch or whatever it is that comes down to keep the line from going backwards would stick. I tried the clip on counters last night and with little resistance such as a small rattle trap it wouldn't even read and with a bottom bouncer type rig it only seemed to read about half the line going out.

If you get a snap on, get a shakespeare. They are very accurate. My buddies all measure their line counter reels with my snap on to calibrate their reels.
They should develop a reel that measures the line through the level wind with a computer chip and digital read out, rather than the rotation of the spool.

Buy the Daiwa's now, or buy them later after spending your money on something else. That became clear not long after the Daiwa's were introduce. Many tourney and charter anglers dumped their Okuma's. Maybe the Okuma's have improved their product, but the Daiwa's are still the mark the Okuma's shoot for. If you don't fish much, the Okuma's may last for you. The $12 clip-ons are good too, if you don't want to invest in a new reel.

As for accuracy, using line counters isn't about dead-on accuracy--It's about repeatability and precision. So buy them in pairs: same rod, same reels, same line. Run them differently until you find what's catching fish, then it's a breeze to put everyone else with the same rig in the zone.

If you fish with kids or beginners, it's also indespensible since you don't need to worry about telling them to find the bottom and come up just above it. I'd take my young (grade school) kids out walleye fishing and I'd drive from the bow while they're in the back. Every time I'd change depth I'd tell them and they'd adjust. They'd catch as many as I would. That's why they're so popular with charter captains.

I have two Okuma Magdas and like them, also a Cabelas line counter reel-that I had to take apart and "reengineer"

Get the Daiwa LC27 Sealines.

[black]DennisW, CROSSINEYES, and others are correct IMHO. I would buy the Daiwa reel over the Okumas Madga Pro. I have several of the 15 and 20 low end Okumas and have used them for a few years. I've trolled wiper, kokes, and macks and they are nothing to rant and rave about. They do about what you'd expect from a $35 reel. I won't buy any more. [/black]
[black][/black]
[black]Now, Okuma makes a few different models and I have never used their higher end stuff which might be good but why risk it? Go buy the Daiwa and be done with it. [/black][black]If you're set on getting the Okumas, I'll sell you mine for a substantial reduction off retail and I'll go buy the Daiwas.[/black]
