Fishing for kings on this clear, small river is a kick in the pants. If you haven't ventured there because of the crowds, this is definitely the year to try it.

I read on the IDF&G site that they are opening up the SF Salmon river for salmon fishing on June 25th.

That's not the good news though....

They've opened up the river all the way down to the East Fork!! That's 33 miles of pristine river fishing compared to stacking us up shoulder to shoulder in the good holes for a five mile stretch. I for one, am excited to explore some new holes downstream.

Remember the days where you had to drive up to the check station each night to log your fish? Glad they put an end to that a few years ago too.

I'll be calling the McCall fish hatchery soon to get an idea of the trap number's coming in. I'd say 100 to 200 fish a day is trip time. Anybody know what the quota is this year?

Just got back yesterday afternoon from a couple days of exploring the new section of river and fishing some great new holes. My son did well, I need to learn how to set the hook better. I used to set the hook so hard people would think I was just going to reel in a jaw or something. [Smile]

The only downside and what kinda bothered me is when you have 33 miles of river to fish and someone stops by and asks if they can fish in the hole too. Or worse, someone just walks up and starts fishing without saying a word and no eye contact. I mean hey, 33 MILES of open water and you can't find a good hole to fish? I can see it on the Little Salmon because there is just so much room to go around. Give me a break. We'd pack up and go find another spot which was cool with us. More exploring to do.[laugh]

Anyway, we had a great time. Here's some pics.

Nice fish! I wish I had time to get up with all the extra river opened up. I agree completely when there's plenty of river to fish people should move on or at the very least actually talk to you about your plans. I don't have an explanation for such behavior but suspect brain damage has something to do with their actions.

It's great that we can fish for salmon again here in Idaho! Here's a pic of a monster 42 incher caught on 7-15 SF Salmon.
