Anyone own an Otter ice fishing shelter? Are they worth the extra money, over the others?

I see Cabelas has them; however, they do not stock them & they are shipped directly from the manufacturer. I would like to see & feel one before buying.

I've fished in Clams, Frabills, Eastman/Eskimo Ice cubes and Cabela's shantys. However, I've fished in an Otter too. The Otter, in my opinion, is the "Cadillac" of ice fishing shantys. They just seem to be made stronger and of better quality materials. Are they worth the extra money? That is only something you can decide. Personally I think they are!

Thanks! I appreciate the input.

I wore the bottom out of my Eskimo Quickflip and need to find a replacement.

Otter is the choice if you're looking for a flip over shelter. Mine is going on ten years now and canvas, rails and sled are still good to go. I lived in MN before moving here and you'll see Otters everywhere far more popular than Clam or Frabill. Sled is great I've dragged mine all over behind a snowmobile and still have plenty of years of use left. I probably ice fished 10 times a month back in MN and ice season there runs from mid-Dec to early April. I had the shelter out in -30 temps and with a Big Buddy heater was able to fish without a jacket in the shelter. With the new insulation canvas you'd never get cold. And there is plenty of room. Can't go wrong.

Hey thanks a lot for the input. Does yours have the square tubing? If so, have you found any problems extending the poles in the cold? Does the plastic inserts on the end of the extending poles work OK in the cold?

Square tubing works great. Never had an issue and I have been out in -30 temps with it. Just wipe it with a light coat of WD40 at the start of the season. Pretty solid in the wind[reply][/reply]. I have the bench seat in mine instead of the individual seats and have been able to fish three people in it. Plenty of room for two.

Great feedback - I think I will pick one up during the "employee pricing" sale next week at Cabelas.
