What's Your Top 5-10 Tastiest Fish to Catch in Utah? - TroutFool - 03-25-2010 I won't deny it, half of fishing for me is taking fish home for dinner. The only species I've really caught and eaten are trout and I love it, but I have a goal to start fishing other species as well. Just wondering what the rest of you think are the tastiest fish here in Utah. Assuming we're supposed to list in order of preference... Walleye Perch Crayfish Catfish Trout All other panfish (crappie, bass, wiper, etc) taste about the same to me. But I also haven't gotten much chance to eat them, so maybe I miss any subtle differences with lack of experience? Haven't tried carp yet, but I would like to some day! Just to see what it's like. P.S. I'm with you, on the reason for fishing. I'll practice catch and release when it's required (like for Tiger Musky), but if I can get a dinner out of it, I will! The main reason I hate getting skunked, is spending all the money, time and effort, and not getting something for it (the whole "being out in nature" doesn't count...I can do that for free in my back yard! Unbelievable.... just unbelievable.[frown] Just kidding but I think that walleye, perch, crappie, and bluegill are all in the same boat when it comes to eating and all of them are excellent. I think that white bass, wipers, and stripers have relatively the same flavor and they are really good. Catfish done right is always good too but catfish fried with a chunk of fat left on can ruin your opinion of eating them for life. This year I would like to try Striped bass and Wiper. The only fish that I can't stand to eat is Lake trout. I caught a small one (18") at Fish lake years ago and my cousin told me that they didn't taste good. So I turned it loose and It floated back up about a hundred feet away. I flipped the boat around and picked it back up. I grilled it up that night and he was right! I ate all I could stand and feed the rest to a stray cat. Any kind of Bass (White,Wiper, Striper, Large, Small) 10.Carp (from CLEAR,COLD water - not bad!) * Not true bass? Trout didn't even make the top 10 (or the top 20 for that matter) Trout are to survive on when LOST in the mountains...LOL...gunna takes some "hits" for that! That was actually kinda TUFF TO DO!! Never thought of "such things" lately...the good fish to eat in Utah are the top 4 of my list, except for the cats, and I don't eat them here after getting them in KS. Never have much cared for trout, except when my Grandpa use to use them for bait for catfish in Nebraska...still not sure if it was illegal or not, but that was 40+ yrs ago and he's dead...so...not giving away any "secrets" or nothing....
