Going for the gold - Kent - 09-07-2014

I have wanted to catch a Golden Trout for a few years, and with the boat being in Hyrum, being repaired, it was a good time to finally catch one. Kory and I left at our usual time to head to the high country. Several fellow BFT members had kindly given me directions, along with this advice from one:

"... you must not like your vehicle if you want to go to Echo. Wink"

I learned to fully appreciate why he wrote those words. All I can say is Kawasaki and Son of Hibachi![shocked] Attached are a couple pictures of the roads (my camera was acting strange in that one photo and somehow got the same image twice in the same picture). I have never driven on roads that rough before to get to a place to fish.

We finally made it to our destination - Echo Lake and started to cast. It didn't take long to get a golden trout checked off our bucket lists. In the next few hours we got it checked off many more times. The catching was fast and furious for mostly golden trout with an occasional brook trout thrown in. And they were huge! I believe my largest golden must have gone at least 6 inches long and my largest brook trout was pushing 7 inches long.[Wink]

Around 2:00 PM we decided to give the golden trout a rest and headed for Pyramid Lake. After enduring extremely rough roads again we arrived at a beautiful small lake. The catch was much slower here, but the two brook trout that I caught were in the 10 or 11 inch range. Kory had one bite but that was it. After a couple hours of slow catching we decided to move on to Trial Lake and see if we could find a grayling.

No luck at Trial Lake with the grayling but it was non-stop action for starving rainbows and starving tiger trout. With as many minnows swimming the shoreline, and we both caught a couple red shiner minnows while fishing for other species, I have no idea why the tiger trout aren't fatter in Trial Lake.

The weather was decent all day, with little wind and comfortable temperatures with a little rain in the afternoon. Another great outing with Kory to a beautiful part of our state.

Here's some more photos of the goldens and the road without the double shots. Strange that your camera did that.

If you had not said that was a double exposure or whatever it was, I would have thought you had come to the split in the road. Some good looking pics Kent and Kory, those are some colorful fish. Do you know it they are that color all year or are they getting ready to spawn? That looks like an ATV road. Thanks for sharing your report and pics.

Nice Golden. I have not caught one in several years but I am ready to try for more.

Beautiful fish there and definitely need a high clearance vehicle for the road.

I have no idea, and we saw several ATVs and they were able to travel much faster than we could.

Glad you struck gold and got that off the list. Your first pictured golden is one of the "fattest" I've seen since the planting. (which is Sad and shows the challenge there)

Hope your vehicle is in one piece and you had a good time.

Nice goldens. I guess I must be desensitized, because to me the road into Murdock Basin is rough, but not really that bad. I have traveled much worse in my quest for large brook trout in both the Uintas and on Boulder.

Your goldens are much more colorful than the ones my grandsons and I caught there in the spring.

They did restock it again this year. The recently stocked fish take some time to color up. That road is actually been in better shape for about the last 3 years than anytime in the preceding decade. A pickup can make it but they bounce around so much the ATV's will be passing you. I drive in to fish Beaver Dam Wash above Motoqua most winters. The road to Echo is a cake walk compared to that road. It serves it's purpose though as I've never encountered another fisherman.

How many miles is it into Echo.

Off Mirror Lake Highway it's about 7 miles and the first half is pretty easy. A basic AWD/4WD SUV with 9 inches of clearance can get in under 30 minutes.
