I have wanted to catch a Golden Trout for a few years, and with the boat being in Hyrum, being repaired, it was a good time to finally catch one. Kory and I left at our usual time to head to the high country. Several fellow BFT members had kindly given me directions, along with this advice from one:
"... you must not like your vehicle if you want to go to Echo. "
I learned to fully appreciate why he wrote those words. All I can say is Kawasaki and Son of Hibachi![shocked] Attached are a couple pictures of the roads (my camera was acting strange in that one photo and somehow got the same image twice in the same picture). I have never driven on roads that rough before to get to a place to fish.
We finally made it to our destination - Echo Lake and started to cast. It didn't take long to get a golden trout checked off our bucket lists. In the next few hours we got it checked off many more times. The catching was fast and furious for mostly golden trout with an occasional brook trout thrown in. And they were huge! I believe my largest golden must have gone at least 6 inches long and my largest brook trout was pushing 7 inches long.[]
Around 2:00 PM we decided to give the golden trout a rest and headed for Pyramid Lake. After enduring extremely rough roads again we arrived at a beautiful small lake. The catch was much slower here, but the two brook trout that I caught were in the 10 or 11 inch range. Kory had one bite but that was it. After a couple hours of slow catching we decided to move on to Trial Lake and see if we could find a grayling.
No luck at Trial Lake with the grayling but it was non-stop action for starving rainbows and starving tiger trout. With as many minnows swimming the shoreline, and we both caught a couple red shiner minnows while fishing for other species, I have no idea why the tiger trout aren't fatter in Trial Lake.
The weather was decent all day, with little wind and comfortable temperatures with a little rain in the afternoon. Another great outing with Kory to a beautiful part of our state.
