4x4,
Check out this site, it will answer most of your questions. http://www.vexilar.com
I ice fish with a Vexilar. If I were to get to the lake and discover that I had left it at home. I would go back home and get it. Once you use one you will realize that if you don't have one you're fishing blind. It definitely adds to the enjoyment of fishing. Remember all those bites you've missed? Well with a Vexilar you can see the fish approach your bait and be ready to set the hook. You can also see how they react to your bait so you can adjust your presentation to their liking, or change your bait all together.

I've got the FL-8 SE, and I love it. There's also a FL-18 that allows you to zoom in on the bottom 10 feet of the spot you're fishing over. But I see no real reason for it. So many fish can come through the water column above that 10' window that I don't want to miss them. Even when fishing for perch, such as Rockport. To zoom in on the bottom where the perch roam is fine, but not really necessary. If they're there, they're there! And when a trout comes through around 20' when the bottom is at 40' ... well, I think you see my reasoning.
Good luck!

I have the FL-18. The bottom zooms in on the bottom 6 feet. I don’t use it much in water under 20’ how ever if you get in to deeper water it is nice to have. You can still see the whole water column on the right side and the bottom 6 feet on the left. If you use the zoom in over 20’ of water it make it easier to see if the fish are right on the bottom or a 2 feet off, with out the zoom the fish look like they are right on the bottom.

I haven't used a vexilar but I have used a marcum. What do you think the biggest difference is between the two or is there any. I am very impressed with the marcum and plan on buying one or the other. Thanks.

The biggest difference between a Marcum and a Vexilar is the Marcum has the capability to zoom into any section of the water column. The Vexilar can just zoom into the bottom six feet. I bought my son a Vexilar for Christmas. It is really nice to have the bottom six feet shown in zoom on the left, and the entire water column on the right. In the future I will probably buy myself a Marcum. To be able to zoom in on areas other than the bottom six feet is very attractive. Vexilar has been the biggest name in flashers for a long time, but Marcum is now showing some competition. That will only make both products better. I agree with Slayerace, they make a huge difference in your effectiveness. My son has a real hard time fishing with out his.
Weak signals show as green, these are small fish or larger fish on the outer areas of the cone. Yellow are medium signals, or fish approaching the center of the cone. Red means the fish is large or right at the center of the cone! Get ready for the hit! Sunday we were fishing on Rockport. At time the flasher was showing fish throughtout the bottom six feet. The thing was lighting up like a Christmas tree, and the bites were nonstop.
Several times this year at the outlet at Utah Lake we used the Vexilar to find fish. Made a big difference. We never got skunked, and caught fish when no one else did. No sense fishing where the fish aren't. Be happy to show it to anyone if you find us on the ice. Big thanks to the folks who showed my son their sonar units last year on the ice. He talked to everyone he could find and decided he wanted a Vexilar.
Hope this helps.

I have the vexilar sl-8. It does not have the zoom feature and I have not used one with a zoom so I don't know if it is a feature worth having. I feel like it is un-necessary. But if I tried one, I may feel different. I can read the bottom well enough to tell if anything is hugging it. The bottom reading will stay constant and when a fish is hugging it, it will vary on the screen.

Hi since your talking about flashers I was wondering if anyone is familiar with older flashers like the old yellow or green lowrance LO-K-TORs? Can you see your jig with them like the Vexilars? Can it detect perch a few inches off the bottom?
I've seen the vexilars and they are really nice but out of my current price range. I'm thinking that some kind of sonar is better than no sonar and I think I like the flasher type more than an LCD type. Any info would be appreciated.

A model that doesn't zoom the bottom is more than adequate for most ice fishing; however, in deep water (60 + feet), and especially if you target fish that hug the bottom, I believe a zoom is extremely useful. If you plan on fishing for macks, and are going to purchase a flasher-type fishfinder, spend the extra bucks and get one with a zoom feature. Vexilar and other flasher-type units has a big following (especially for ice fishing); however, there is also a big following for the display-type fishfinders for ice fishing. I could be happy fishing with a high-quality unit of either type, but am partial to my Raytheon L470 display-type fishfinder -- which I use on my boat, and after today will be using ice fishing.
