I checked out Newton this morning with the intent of fishing there if the conditions were favorable. The water level in the reservoir is still rising and the shoreline/ice sheet interface continues to be iffy. I was able to walk around on the ice near the dam, however my movement created ripples in the open water near the shore 50 feet away. You don't need a plank to get on the ice in most places but expect to cross through some slushy water. There appears to be a lot of variation in the quality of the ice. I didn't drill any holes but some older ones close in appeared to show that the ice was about 3 inches.
So is it safe for ice fishing? I think that depends upon an individuals comfort level. There were two fisherman off of the parking lot point. I decided that I didn't want to take the risk so I didn't fish there this morning.
