NBC Day at Willard
#1
Launched at 6am from the south marina and ran over to the north end of freeway bay Pelican Beach area and put out our 4 fligs tipped with chub meat, almost immediately got our first cat and had 2 limits of cats in the box by 8:30am. Caught them in 17-20’ of water going .5 mph. Purple Perch was the most productive followed by orange perch whirley flig, that caught 3 over 25”. We looked for wiper boils and cast rattling cranks and cast masters after that for wipers no love then trolled cranks through freeway bay after that with no luck. I talked to a guy at the cleaning station that had 4 limits of juvenile wipers he caught fishing worm harness’s down 10’ on his down riggers along the west wall.

Sounds like a fliggin' good time.  Gotta love those kitties.  They really fight hard in the warmer water and they will always show up for some tugs even when the "glamor" species are playing hard to get.  Pretty good eating too.  I have a few family members that like properly prepared catfish better than most other species.

Pat, I need to get you out in my boat this fall to re-up my supply of fligs and trade fishing stories. We have fished a lot of the same lakes and I cherish stories from my time on the central coast of California, south east Idaho and northern Utah.

Love to.  Are you sure we didn't go to different schools together?

At some point I lived, worked and fished in San Diego, Garden Grove, Oxnard, Santa Barbara and Sacramento.  Really have some good rememberies of my California days.  Some not so good.  Doubt I would find it livable or to my liking if I ever went back.  I know the cost of living in most of my former residence areas is outrageous now.  And the fishing and regulations have really changed too.

Nice haul Shawn and any cat over 24" is nice one. How big were those smaller wipers that guy caught? Hope he wasn't keeping those smaller ones under 12".

That's a bummer, those same wipers would have been a decent size in a year.

Looks like a nice haul of cats there Shawn. Glad to hear they are biting even if the wipers are tight lipped.
