[size 2]Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program Offers Outdoor Workshop Opportunities
SALEM - Interested in learning to clam, fly fish or identify those birds in your backyard? The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is currently accepting registrations for the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshops scheduled for May and June. There are a variety of great activities being offered in the next few months and Nancy Smogor, BOW Coordinator, wants to invite interested individuals to come join in the fun.
Upcoming workshops that still have space available include:
· May 15 - Birds of a Feather, a basic birding workshop, at Summer Lake Wildlife Area in south central Oregon. This workshop will cover beginning birding techniques, as well as use of field guides, binoculars and spotting scopes. Cost is $60 and includes equipment, instruction, meals and camping.
· May 22 - A Day at the Range, near Vale, will give participants the chance to select from big game hunting, handgun skills, map and compass, outdoor survival, shotgun skills and small bore rifle skills. This workshop costs $60 and includes use of all equipment, instruction, camping and meals.
· June 5 - Clammin' the North Coast will teach you how to clam, how to identify clams and how to prepare your catch for eating. This workshop will be held at Whiskey Creek Hatchery near Tillamook. The fee for this event is $60 and includes use of equipment, instruction and meals.
· June 5 - Camp Cookin' will inspire you about how good food can taste in the outdoors. A variety of outdoor cooking methods will be covered and all equipment will be provided. This workshop will be held at Emigrant Springs State Park, located near Pendleton. The $60 registration fee includes instruction, meals and lots of great food to sample.
· June 12-13 at La Pine State Park. This multi-activity workshop is one of ODFW's most popular and offers more than a dozen activities including canoeing, fly fishing, backpacking and falconry. The $60 registration fee includes the choice of two classes, meals, instruction and use of all necessary equipment. It also may include camping.
ODFW plans to hold more workshops from July through the end of the year, including a horseback workshop at Steens Mountain, fly fishing on the Rogue and a multi-activity event in Klamath Falls.
