Be careful netting red shiners and chubs at Strawberry
#1
Saturday at Strawberry my cousin asked me why I partially filled an old ice box full of water before using my casting net? I replied because I emptied my net into the ice box and that way if I happened to net any trout minnows that I could release them unharmed. He asked how many trout I had previously netted, and I responded none. His job was to collect the minnows out of the ice box and put them into a plastic bag. He immediately told me that I had caught some trout, and I was sure that he thought that some red shiners were trout, but he was right. I ended up catching four or five trout with my casting net on Saturday. The largest was about five inches long. All were safely returned to the water. Be careful that you don't keep any trout, that is the one thing that a game warden will check is to make sure that you are not keeping any trout that were caught with your net.

Thanks for the reminder Kent. It can turn into a very expensive bait getting trip really fast if you don't cull out the trout.

Hey Kent , what kind of trout did you find in your net ? Last time I was there at night I seen few 4" Rainbows cruising the shore line with the redside shiners and chub . There does seem to be more chub than anything else along the shoreline .

I'm not sure if they were rainbows or cutts (probably could have been able to tell by looking at the color of their fins), it was obvious that they were trout, but my only concern was to get them back into the lake ASAP.

All the little trout I have netted this year have been cutts.
