[size 1]What does $ 4 million look like? It looks like 250 sportfishing boats on trailers driving down I-5. Join the Fishermen’s Rally on Sept 8th at Holladay Park in NE Portland. Better yet bring your boat for the police-escorted convoy from Fishermen’s Marine at Delta Park to the event beforehand. To be part of this historic convoy meet at 8:00 AM on Sept 8th in the parking lot of Fisherman’s Marine in Delta Park – call 503-631-8859 for directions.
This is your opportunity to make a strong statement to local, regional and federal agencies and legislators and participate in the success and future of NW fishing. We need you there! The more who show up the stronger our message.
More than ever our government needs to know that “sportfishing means business.” A recent Oregonian headline read “More Fish, More Boats…” That’s true, but we would also say “More Fish, More Boats, More Jobs, Longer Fishing Seasons, and a Stronger Northwest Economy.” How we get there is fairly clear: the more smolts that make it safely downriver to the ocean, the more big fish we have on ice and the safer our jobs are at the end of the day.
Unfortunately, the federal government has done as little as possible to protect our salmon runs; as a result, Northwest fishermen and salmon dependent communities are not getting a fair shake. Once the home to the greatest salmon fishery in the world, the Northwest now struggles with dwindling populations and increasingly strict fishing regulations.
We’re one fish away from a zero bag limit; and, for us, it’s the last straw. The time has come to join our fellow fishermen, and tell Congress that there is a better solution. Let’s tell the feds exactly what we think of their plan for our salmon, our jobs, our way of life, and our livelihoods.
On September 8th in Portland, OR, we have the chance to change the direction of federal policy related to our salmon and steelhead stocks. It’s going to take a unified and strong voice to be heard. To succeed we need ALL FISHERMAN to join this united front as we send a message to our Congressional representatives, BPA, the Army Corps, NOAA Fisheries, and all those people in Washington, DC who think they know what’s best for our fish. We have a vision and it’s not decreasing salmon populations and decreasing jobs. Help us tell our leaders that we need a change in the Northwest and that SALMON MEAN BUSINESS.
