Lake Mead 2/8/05
#1
[size 2] [font "comic sans ms"]Hit the lake at about 05:30, Saddle Cove. Only one other outfit was there that early. Had the Bass Hunter in the bed of my truck but it was to dark to launch (no lights). So I grabbed a rod and the bait bucket and hit the shore, sat there for about 30 minutes with nothing. Started to get light and it was time get the boat unloaded and load everything in it. By the time I got it all fit to fish out of, I had a crowd of 4 people come over a check out the contraption. I think I spurred some others to try the same. It still wasn't enough light to launch so with the guys around I pitched the BFT board thingy, but it was met with mixed opinions. Don't think they were all that interested but I tried. Finally it was light enough to launch (maiden voyage). The wind was light out of the Northeast which helped push me out. Got my SmartCast out and ready, started marking some fish at 40' or so just off the bottom. Went back to the upwind side and anchored. After trying just about everything I brought including anchovies, nothing. Pulled the anchor and tooled around until I marked more fish at about 40'. Tried the same as before and netted nothing again. After about 4 hours of this I decided to do some more tooling around. Not fishing just tooling and my suspicions became evident every time the depth got 40' or the SmartCast would show fish stacked right on top of each other. That's it I'm done with the SmartCast, even after buying a new transducer my previous problem was never corrected. After a total of 6 hours and nothing to show for it I decided to head back to shore to get the circulation restored to my lower body. Grabbed a few rods and headed over to Pumphouse Cove. While I was pacing to get felling back in my hips and legs, I got one big bite, the fish felt pretty good in size but through the hook before I could get a look at it. 7 hours, one bite, not a bad day..............................

A note about the water level, on the way home I looked over to the spot I usually hit at Government Wash and the island that I had posted about a while back was just about completly submerged. Estimated the water has come up about 5 feet.

Take care,
David
