2/25/05 - Ice at Cave Lake is Unsafe.
A recent draw down of water at Cave Lake in White Pine County has made for unsafe ice conditions and prompted the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) to advise anglers to stay off the ice.
Due to safety concerns at the dam, NDOW released two feet of water in advance of the anticipated snowmelt. The quick drop in the water level caused ice that covers the reservoir to become unstable.
The dam at Cave Lake will be undergoing reconstruction within the next few years to alleviate existing structural problems.
Cave Lake State Park is located south of Ely in the Schell Creek Mountain Range. It is a popular location for camping, hiking and trout fishing.

Fishing is slowing and will continue to get slower the longer ice stays on the lake, according to Chris Crookshanks, NDOW biologist. Even so, anglers are catching trout through ice that is 8 to 10 inches thick. Live worms hooked on yellow and white crappie jigs are the best bait for catching the fish.
Campers and anglers have been finding cool evenings, pleasant afternoon temperatures and slow fishing, according to the Nevada Division of State Parks.
The lake is free of ice and boats are being launched. Even so, most anglers are catching no more than 2 or 3 rainbow trout per day.
Temperatures have been ranging from the low 20s at night to around 50 during the day. Restrooms are open and heated and showers have hot water.
The lake is full of water, but the fishing has been very slow for rainbow trout. Largemouth bass and crappie have not yet become active because of cold water temperatures.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has received conflicting reports this week with some anglers reporting success while others are saying the fishing has been slow.
Most of the anglers who have been fishing in the Boulder Basin have told NDOW that fishing has been slow and the majority of striped bass they have caught recently are thin. However, one fisherman reported that he brought 10 chunky stripers to his boat on Sunday (2/27/05) at Las Vegas Wash. Another boater caught a thin 13-pound striper outside B-5 Cove following the trout plants.
Many boaters are now trolling deep to catch stripers. Shore anglers are fishing with anchovies, picking up a small number of fish around Hemenway Harbor.
Creel census clerks working at cleaning stations in the Overton Arm over the weekend did not see any stripers. Competitors in a weekend largemouth bass fishing tournament said the bass fishing was slow in that part of the lake.
Walt deMattos, NDOW creel census clerk, said the water level has increased enough to allow boaters to return to the Virgin River area. He believes that the mild weather may make for a good weekend of fishing at the lake.
Last week’s rainbow trout plants were not held until Sunday (2/27/05) because of a delay in delivery from a commercial hatchery in Oregon. This week’s plants are scheduled to take place Friday (3/4/05) at Hemenway, Horsepower, North Saddle and Pumphouse coves.
The few anglers who were fishing on Sunday (2/27/05) at Willow Beach after the delayed rainbow trout plants had fair luck fishing with PowerBait. No stripers were seen after the plant.
One angler told NDOW that many people fishing at Willow Beach recently have hindered their success by using hooks that are too large and putting too much bait on the hooks. He said he has had success using size 18 treble hooks baited with orange PowerBait just large enough to cover the hooks.
Fishing continues to be slow for striped bass around Cottonwood Cove. Very few anglers have been trying their luck because of the poor fishing.
Storms made for unpleasant fishing conditions and kept anglers away from the Nye County management area. However, fishing should be very good by the weekend because ice is off the lakes and anglers were catching rainbow trout prior to storms.
Dan Maes, NDOW area technician, said anglers have been catching rainbows that range from just under 12 inches to 18 inches. Most of the fish caught range from 13 to 14 inches. Trout are being taken from the dams with PowerBait and live worms. Fly fishing from float tubes has been very good.
“This is the time of year that people look forward to because it’s traditionally the time when you have a chance at getting big fish. The forecast is for nice weather, so this could be a weekend that fishermen won’t want to miss,” Maes said.
[#990033]URBAN PONDS[/#990033]
Ponds were stocked Sunday (2/27/05) at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. The final spring trout plants at the ponds are scheduled for Friday, March 18. Channel catfish will be stocked by NDOW during the summer months.
