Chris Crookshanks , NDOW biologist, said the rainbow trout are entering their spawning mode and the fishing has slowed, as is typical for this time of year. The action should improve in about a month when their spawn is finished.
Fishing pressure was heavy this past week as anglers took advantage of the second NDOW stocking of rainbow trout. An additional 4,700 fish were stocked last week. Anglers reported good success for fish that averaged 10 inches. PowerBait and live worms were taking the fish.
[#990033]ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Anglers reported continued success for stocked rainbow trout that averaged 10 inches. PowerBait and night crawlers were taking the fish. The reservoir was stocked last week with rainbow trout.
Fishing continues to be slow throughout the Boulder Basin but is showing signs of life in the Overton Arm with anglers enjoying success for stripers in that part of the lake, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).
Despite strong winds, boaters had some luck for stripers in back of Fish Island and at St. Thomas in the Overton Arm. One boater brought a pair of largemouth bass to the fish cleaning station on Saturday (4/2/05) that weighed 3 pounds each. The fish were caught near Fish Island with crank baits.
A pair of anglers fishing from shore Sunday (4/3/05) at Echo Bay caught 15 stripers and two catfish. Boaters are catching stripers in Las Vegas Wash.
NDOW biologists said that now is the time of year that stripers traditionally begin to spawn and they normally can be found close to shore at depths of 50 to 60 feet. In previous years, anglers have found fish spawning in the Meadows, Walker Wash, the Meat Hole, Fish Island and Rogers Bay areas.
Unlike some fish, stripers will feed while spawning. Chumming will attract the fish and they can be caught with anchovies or lures that imitate shad, such as Spots. Jigging spoons are not as productive at catching the fish at this time of year, but they will be in a month or two.
Fishing was fair after last week’s rainbow trout plant at Willow Beach, although no 10-fish limits were seen. This week’s plant will take place on Friday (4/8/05).
The action for striped bass continues to be below par for both shore anglers and boaters at Cottonwood Cove. Windy weather has kept fishing activity to a minimum in that area of the lake.
Willow Beach Hatchery will stock 3,000 rainbow trout Thursday (4/7/05) at Davis Camp on the Arizona side of the Colorado River below Davis Dam.
Despite intermittent rain and winds, anglers reported very good success for rainbow trout on all reservoirs. The average size fish taken was 14 inches with a few as large as 20 inches. PowerBait and live worms were taking the fish.
NDOW is scheduled to stock Haymeadow and Cold Springs Reservoirs Thursday (04/07/05) and Adams McGill early next week.
[#990033]URBAN PONDS[/#990033]
Surprisingly good fishing for rainbow trout has taken place during the past week with the best success being found at Floyd Lamb State Park where anglers are using PowerBait and small lures to catch the fish. NDOW has concluded its seasonal trout plants, but will be stocking channel catfish through the summer months.
