Dead fish everywhere at Jordanelle
#1
I have fished Jordanelle 4 times in the past 2 weeks and each time I am amazed at all the dead perch floating the surface. Yesterday I made it a point to inspect each perch I saw floating for signs of attack or aggrivation and found only 2 of them to have some sort of teeth marks. The others were all in one piece floating belly up.

Is this because of a predator attacking them and not being able to find the fish after or possibly not being able to fit the fish in its mouth? Or is this a sign of some sort of disease that is killing them off in the lake?

Just curious, there were sooo many floaters yesterday that something has to be up.

My "guess" is that they were caught out of deep water and released. They get their innards squeezed by their expanding swim bladder when they get reeled up from water over 30 feet or so. It is still a problem now even though somewhat less than during the hard water season.

Majority of the perch we found were in 13 feet or less water, and the ones i inspected hadn't had there swim bladder exit there mouth like i see when i pull them from 30+.

Here is a link to an article that has some possible explanations.

I hope this kill isn't too extensive. I remember board members reporting the same thing at Echo last fall and the ice fishing there this winter was poor.

Some time the bass will hit the perch to drive them out of there feeding zone, the perch or other fish are to big for them to eat but they die from the a tack.

too extensive? try to remembe those perch dont belong in that lake and though fun to catch illegally planted and should be taken out if possible.
