Bustin ice to fish at Utah Lake
#1
WalleyeBob and I fished Utah lake today and he got a chance to check out the repair job on his boat the hard way by busting ice all the way out of the harbor to get to the lake. The ice was close to one inch thick and at first I thought it might be thick enough to ice fish instead of fishing in his boat but Bob assured me that he had busted ice thicker than one inch to go fishing before. After we were out of the harbor we headed to the warm spring that was north of the harbor at Lincoln beach. There were a few people fishing from
shore when we arrived at the spring and Bob started catching
white bass right away. After he brought in his third or forth
fish I could not stand it any more, so I ask him for some advice. As the sun came over the mountain I switched to a different jig as Bob caught yet another fish, this one was much bigger. When the fish was close enough to the boat to see, Bob realized it was a huge walleye and told me to get the net, but before I could hand it to him the fish was gone. I finally started catching a few white bass as Bob caught another fish this one was a big crappie. More and more people arrived to fish from shore and one of them was Kent. It seemed like everyone was catching fish but we headed for another area to see if there were more of those big walleye that had moved out into the deeper water. After Bob caught a few carp and a cat we decided to head back to the spring before we left. This time I had the hot hand but soon it was time to leave. It was a fun morning on the water and I want to thank WalleyeBob for a great day on the lake, we've got to do it again. WH2

The ice near the shore in the spring area was melting as the day progressed. HFT let me know if I owe you a milk shake!

Sounds like a good trip. Breaking 1" of ice with the boat, huh? I don't think I'd try it with and aluminum hull unless you're into dents. Those older glass hulls could handle it. Try it in an inflatable. You end up sliding on top of it and you have to keep trying to push yourself back off!

Looks like Ice cream head ache for you Kent. There was a place I could have walked but it didn't look to be a good fishing place.

That's great, I could use an ice-cream headache. With my other opportunities I probably won't even notice the headache.

Hey WH2, glad you could come down and kick some bass with me. We'll do it again soon. If the ice don't end the launching part of the game.[mad]
Sunday was even better fishing for white bass. The boat harbor was about the same for ice. One good Walleye and a big LMB was caught out where we were fishing. Lots of sunnies and crappie were caught up in the warm springs.
Maybe next weekend we could hit Deer Creek and see if the fishies want to play. I'll call the park ranger on friday and see how the launch conditions are.
Utah Lake hit 33 degrees by afternoon on Sunday. A regular heat wave.[blush] Saturday it never got over 32. Sorry folks, but it doesn't look like Utah lake is going to freeze enough for ice fishing this year. Unless we have a major cold spell. Last year it was frozen enough to ice fish about 13 days before x-mas.[Tongue]
Good fishing everyone.
