Ice fishing itch is killing me
#1
I just can't wait! It's killin me!

It's been a few days since we have had a post about how bad the ice fishing bug is itching. So I thought I would start one.

I've been shopping for some insulated bib overalls. Carhart style seem too stiff. I'm looking for the ski bib style - They are a lot more comfortable. I also want hip-high zippers. My target is under $50.

I have already tried Cabelas, Walmart, Shopko, Kmart, Bass Pro, Smith and Edwards, and Al's sporting goods. I have not checked Sportsmans yet because they are so far away and their website stinks. I hate buying clothes on ebay unless I have tried it on somewhere else.

Any suggestions?

What features do you guys like?

[cool]No suggestions here, 'cause I have Carhardts overalls (in black) that i got for Christmas last year and I LOVE them. Maybe it's because they've been washed a time or two and are broken in, but mine are not very stiff (that i remember, anyway). Very warm, and very comfortable.

I hear ya on the ice fishin' itch, though! MAN, is it time yet??? Hunington will freeze over (typically) in about 3 weeks, and scofield a week or two later. Then the berry about two weeks after that (just in the bays though, not the whole lake). I can't wait! Crap-it's getting late. Gotta go catch some z's!

I bought some bibs a long time ago. I was looking at the carhardts but they were to much for my liking, but i found berene they are sold at cal ranch stores and IFA. They are really warm and durable and a lot cheeper then the carhardts, they are the cotton twill shelled ones so i dont know if they would work for you or not. But it has all of the features that you are after, they way be worth a looking into

The carhart bibs break in nicely. I have the black artic extremes that are double insulated, have hip high zippers, a front zipper to speed up relieving yourself, and are the super durable cordora material that is waterproof (the brown and black cotton material ones are not as waterproof). Mine didn't seem too stiff after about the 2nd time I used them. I would never trade them in. I figure in this case you get what you pay for. Just my 25 cents worth....

You may want to try a C-A-L Ranch store, or an IFA store. I think IFA sells the Carharts though.

If you want the Ski-Bib style you need to go to Gart Sports. They have a huge variety of ski-bibs.

Another vote for IFA's no name brand. Got a pair last year for $20, they're not stiff, and have held up good to a couple of washings and plenty warm for every ice trip I've been on. My wife says I look sexy in them.[blush]

Hydrotek,

Two months? That would be almost January! Most on this thread will be ice fishing by the end of November.[cool] By the time frame you mentioned I'll have already fished Hunington, Scofield, and Strawberry and maybe some others.

[cool]Speak for yourself, hydroteck. I hope that you and MANY others don't ice fish till the end of December. That will make the best ice fishing of the year at Hunington, Scofield, and Strawberry much less crowded! I guess it all depends on what YOU consider safe ice. I know for a fact that 3 inches is fine, but personally, I don't go out on it till it's at least 4 inches. By the time frame you mentioned, Scofield will have at least 12 inches of ice by the end of December, so maybe that's what you need to feel safe out there. I hope that the masses all feel the same way. There's guys on this board that have been known to ice fish on like 2 inches of ice (not to mention any names, right icefishinggod, coldfooter, fuzzyfisher,[Wink]).

I sometimes doubt those "thin ice" reports. I just can't see why it would be worth it to venture out like that. Ice thickness is so variable any way. 2" here could be 1/2" over there, and 3+" on the other side. You don't know until it's too late.
I have the black Carharrts too. The bibs with a jacket. Nice way to go out. And you do not get cold in them. I'd rather spend a few more bucks I don't have than go with cheaper stuff that may not be dependable.

I've got the walls extreme cold overalls, They have held up good for many years of fishing and a grundle of other things. Very warm also. Don't forget that your family will probably want to know what your gonna want for christmas and that might be the time to drop the carhart bomb. My next ones will be the black carharts. They will last a long time and worth the extra skins. However you have to do what the pocket book will allow you to do. My doctor has perscribed me multiple meds to combat the itching and other things that come along with the ice fishing blues!!!

[font "Comic Sans MS"][size 3]I've got a pair of Carhart Arctic Extremes I used for a few years and they are pretty good until you get in real wet snow then they absorb water. Nothing like water up your leg or wet thighs and shoulders from falling snow. Silcone spray works OK but it's not foolproof. I'm not saying what I use. You all will give me a rash of...[/size][/font]

I of course wear nothing but NASSTY WEAR fleece lined gortex. You can't beat gortex for wind proffing. Using fleece underneath allows me to de-layer as the day gets warmer. If the wind isn't bad, my outer cover zips off and I still have a fleece shell. I had mine made custom, but you can still get the same effect by getting a gortex ski suit and using polar fleece underneath. I still have my Carharts, but I find you get more warmth per pound by using the gortex/polar fleece combo.
As far as walking on 2" of ice goes, yes I do it and do it regularly. It's not for everyone, I take a rope and a big friend with me. If I go through, he pulls me back in. Or, takes all my stuff and leaves me to drownd. It can be scary being the first to venture on the hard stuff, but doing by it with safety in mind minimizes the pucker factor. Plus, an 18 pack of Coors Light before hand don't hurt none either.
Since I will actually be here this year for opening day of ice fishing I can't wait either. Now that I have an airboat no lake will be safe. I can't wait to run that thing on the Gorge and Strawberry. No worrying about drownding with that thing.
There are two other lakes that freeze about the same time as Huntington. I'll let you know when their frozen, cause I'm fishing them first. Bring on the cold baby.

P.S. BLM wears My Pretty Princess footy pajamas on the ice.

Loren- The IFA Country Store in Hyde Park stocks both the Carhartt and Berne brand bib overalls. Or you can drive over to my store in Tremonton and I will sell you a pair. I use the analogy when selling them that the Carhartts are a Cadillac and the Berne is a Chevrolet. Personally I drive a Chevrolet and buy the cheaper ones and I haven't had any problems with them.
Where do you plan to ice fish at? Maybe we can get together on another trip this winter. Acey
