[size 2]A free program offered by NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife and NJ Trout Unlimited on December 7, 2005. The workshop will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Sparta Middle School in Sparta, NJ. Two hours of NJ Professional Development will be offered
"Raising Trout in the Classroom" is a great way to do hands-on science with middle and high school students. It helps students gain an appreciation for coldwater resources, stream habitats, and the watershed they live on.
Classes obtain the trout eggs from the Pequest Trout Hatchery and raise them for 6 months, taking care of the aquarium and chronicling their growth. Trout Unlimited volunteers can provide classroom enrichment through fly tying and insect identification. An activity guide helps teachers incorporate the activity into their curriculum. At the end of 6 months, your students release trout into an approved water body. You can consider a trip to the hatchery as part of your program.
This informal workshop will take place in New Jersey's premier Trout in the Classroom school. Middle School teacher Marilyn Steneken has had an aquarium set up since 1995. She will discuss the aquarium features, the trout rearing program, and her students' activities relating to trout. If you've considered getting started with this program, this is the time to find out how and get all your questions answered. You will receive a copy of the Trout in the Classroom Activity Guide, which will provide detailed information on getting started, as well as activities for your classroom. Light refreshments will be provided.
