where would a man go to get crappie?
#1
I have a hankerin to get into some crappie and haven't had much luck this year. I am thinking of either hitting rockport for some perch or utah lake for some crappie. I am open to other suggestions though. I have to be to work at 3:00, but I have the morning open for fishing and was just wondering if anyone has any advice?

[cool][#0000ff]Haven't heard any positive reports from either Pineview or Willard yet.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There have been some crappies coming from below the pumps, along pockets in the river. I also heard an unconfirmed report of some coming from around the docks at Lindon.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Once the ice is off at Lincoln Beach, there is usually some crappie action near the dock at the boat ramp. Also some walleyes chasing the crappies if you get lucky.[/#0000ff]

I was at lincoln last saturday for an hour and a half.Never got any bites on the open water. The boat ramp had broken ice and it was disappearing as the day got warmer.I am heading there tommorow after work and give it a try for crappie or anything else that wants to bite.

You could always come back for a visit to Cali. There are a few lakes within the vicinity that have crappie in them.[cool]

I'd think you can probably work up a fair batch of the crappies by stopping in at a couple of the local buffets in our fine valley.[pirate]

Oh wait, your probably talk the fish species, right?

My bad!

TRY TUBING THE WARM SPRINGS. MOST WINTERS PEOPLE GET A TON OUT THERE.

[cool][#0000ff]The springs are not warm this year. Very little flow and the water is deep over them. The water temps are the same as the rest of the lake and there haven't been any fish holding in the springs at all.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Several years of drought depleted the underground reservoirs that feed the springs. It will be another year or two of good runoff to bring them back.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Just start at the pumps and move downstream, stopping to prospect every hole you come to. Some will have a few fish. Most will not. Once you catch one, there will usually be more.[/#0000ff]

Which warm springs are you talking about?[reply]

[cool][#0000ff]There are springs entering Utah Lake in several places around the lake. The best known and most often fished ones are at Lincoln Beach. There are at least three easily identifiable main springs, and several minor ones. The "first spring" is the deepest, usually has the greatest flow and is most popular with those who like to take advantage of their fish magnet qualities.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The attached picture was taken in December '04, just before the lake level began rising again, after several years of drought. You can see the "bowl" formed by the spring. When the warmer water was flowing well, several species of fish either came right inside the bowl, or grouped up just at the outflow channel.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The rocks around that first spring are now from 3-6 feet underwater, and the depth of the "bowl" is up to 9 feet deep. The flow is currently very low and the thermal attraction is not enough to make it a good spot to get schooling fish. [/#0000ff]

Someone once told me about some warm springs out by dugway, past the Camp Williams firing range that contained warmwater panfish, (Crappie, Bluegill, etc.), (not Stansbury), but I've never been able to verify it. I thought that might be the ones you were talking about. Anyone out there know anything about springs out there?

I caught 3 crappie at pineview this year, at the second pull off towards the damb on the south side. Fishing was very slow, caught 1 carp and 1 perch that day also. Used a small spoon and 12 in above that used small curly tale both tipped with wax worm. Good luck,

Don't eat anything out of Gunlock, high mercury levels. It may be in the proclamation or check DWR homepage. If you want big crappie hit Quail, not sure of the best time to get them, but have caught a few slabs dropshotting.
