Big Snapper, Keeper Gags, Hogs & Little Tunnys: Bonita Beach, FL Fishbuster Dave
#1
[cool] Fishing 10 miles off Doc’s Sunday, with the Billy Fritzo party, we caught four limits of mangrove snapper to 15 inches, and released keeper-sized triggerfish, grunts, and a 50 pound black drum, all on live shrimp. The black drum have been around for several weeks now, and the ones we have caught and released have ranged between 30 and 45 pounds, consistently. Fishing Thursday with the Howard Walker party, in 33 feet off Doc’s Beach House, we caught mangrove snapper to 16 inches, triggerfish, porkfish, grunts, and a 9 pound little tunny, using live shrimp. Saturday, conditions appeared calm, but once out about 10 miles, we encountered 4’ swells with the Bob Pumford party. It was rainy, with poor visibility, and action was slow most of the morning, with only grunts, porkfish & triggerfish. We eventually hooked up on some mangrove snapper, and also gag grouper, but only to 19 inches. Sunday began rough, but calmed down as the day progressed. Fishing 11 miles off Bonita Beach with the Andy Ungar party, we did well with a variety of fish: keeper gag grouper to 24 inches, mangrove snapper to 18 inches, big sheepshead & triggerfish, two hogfish to 15 inches, and a ten pound little tunny, all on live shrimp.
