Hyrum help me
#1
I am going to try Hyrum on thursday for the first time, just wanted to ask for advice on location, depth, or rig. I drove out there today to check it out, there was a couple of guys down by the outlet who used a board to get on the ice. They hadn't caught anything yet, but they had just started. If you have any tips, let me know, I will post a report thurs night, Thanks advanced.

[size 2][#ff0000]We usually catch a few 12 inch trout just out from the hells-half acre little bay on the south side with a ½ to ¾ inch strip of perch meat with the skin attached. There is almost always a few little perch that others have left on the ice to choose from when you get there. Drop it to the bottom then back up 6-12 inches and lightly jig minnow style. In general I've found that if I'm goin' for Trout, I have better luck in 10 feet or less of water. If I'm after Perch, I go much deeper, though I can catch a few Trout out deep too.

I've also noticed that fishing just out from where seeps run into the water seems to be more productive. There are several seeps around the reservoir. There's one on the east end of the swim beach that's quit popular.

Any place you can find structure can also be good. The sunken car bodies are good structure. The sand bar that separates Devils Half Acre from the rest of the reservoir is good structure. Fish just off the bar on the reservoir side. There are even a couple of small mounds that show themselves during low water about half way between the swim beach and the car bodies. They're concretions from old springs that no longer flow. Many lower units have been destroyed on them when they've been out of site just barely under the water.

An ice fly tipped with a patch of worm or power bait nugget works good for the Trout. Tip an ice fly with something to catch the first Perch and Perch's eyes work good for the Perch from then on. A flasher above the ice fly will help bring fish in from a ways away.

It's been so dang warm here in Hyrum the ice is gettin' wet on top. There wasn't much to begin with, so be careful if you venture out.

Thanks RNL I have been watching your weather station, from the looks of the average temps I may have to take my waders with me LOL. I will just play it by ear, if it is too bad, I will just break out the fly rod and try the river. Thanks for the heads up

From the boat launch, straight across the lake, look for the biggest tree on the horizon, center between the launch and the tree, 56' of water, 150 feet from the far shore, put meat on the jig, all the way down. Watch you're fish finder, the Trout will be be 24' down and will hit an orange ice fly with a meal worm. I use 2 poles, one for the Perch down deep and one for the Trout mid depth. The Perch will look like a line above the bottom about 2 feet. They'll come in and out but if you can find the center of the school you're in there. My second favorite Perch lake in the state. P.S. Rockport #1.

Me, Bean and Jmig will be there Sat. if the ice is good. You'll know where to find me. I start fishing when the sun comes up. If there is a big black Dodge in the parking lot, with Ward Burton stickers on it, it's me.
