lake trout off of the docks? where are you fishing? macs are meat eaters. i would suggest putting a strip of sucker meat on a hook and sinking it to the bottom. ive caught a lot of small macs this way, as well as my share of splake. you could also try sweetening the deal with a little anchovie or herring smelly jelly. just let the offering sit still on the bottom. let us know how you do!

Spring
After ice-out, lake trout roam the shoreline shallows and reefs, where they remain until water temperatures warm in early summer. Lake trout like bait. Use medium-weight spinning gear to bottom-fish with dead ciscos, suckers or suspend live minnows beneath a float. Troll with spinners tipped with minnows. Cast or troll with white bucktail jigs, crankbaits, or flashy spoons. Focus your efforts in depths shallower than 30 feet. Lake trout are often most active at dawn or dusk.

I had pretty good luck on a overcast rainy days too. I used minnows and just the hook nothing else set the bait lose and leave the reel's bail open and watch the line.

[red] I have to agree with bkidder on this one, put a piece of Sucker meat or something of the kind and soak it in Smelly Jelly maybe Anchovie flavor or herring . Lake trout are very lazy and usually won't chase a bait unless you can piss it off.[/red]

thats too bad that no fish were caught. what kind of lake is it? (big or small?) do you know the water temp, bottom depth and structure of the lake? if you have some trolling gear i could pm you with a couple of good rig suggestions that have worked really well for me in the spring time. (rigs that i'll be using in about three weeks!) what methods did you try from the docks?
