Marcus and I made it out to North Zuma around 9am. My first cast with the 1.5" motoroil grub resulted in a 14" smelt. The water was really clear and that was all that came up there.

Now to the fun part! We went down to South Zuma (Free Zuma)and started throwing the same grubs. It was pretty slow until we found this one rip area surrounded by the only muddy water in the area. The fishing was on! The action was non stop from about 10:30 to 12pm (peak high tide was around 12). Here are some highlights:

1. I feel a thump so I set the hook. All I felt was weight and my line started peeling out drag for a good 20 seconds. First thought was a bat ray, 2nd thought was a halibut, but what came up was a 14" pig perch that was probably close to 2lbs. My biggest perch ever!!! The thing actually had big teeth. It was released safely back into the water for our future's sake.

2. I somehow managed to foul hook 2 small leopard sharks (the biggest was about 14"). They fought well and I swear they at least tasted the grub. Released.

3. As the bite is winding down, Marcus proceeds to pull in 4 slab perch in a row. The average size was about a pound!

Summary:

Fish caught: 35+ perch (all BSP except 1 walleye) up to 14" and only a handful of dinks (average was handsized or bigger), 2 small leopards, 2 decent sized smelt
Rod: 10' B&M Ultimate Crappie Rod
Reel: Shimano Sedona 2000
Line: 6lbs Maxima, 4lbs Seaguar flourocarbon leader
Rig: Carolina rig with 1/2oz sinker and size 8 Owner Mosquito Hook
Bait: 1.5" motoroil/red flk grub with Smelly Jelly Squid and Shrimp scent
Retrieve: very slow or no movement, sometimes a small twitch would trigger a strike.

A great day!!!

Tom
