More than 30 trout over the 10-pound mark caught at Santa Ana River Lakes
#1
There were over 30 trout that were reported better than 10 pounds caught during the special four-day Crave Bait promotional event this past Thursday through Sunday at Santa Ana River Lakes, and four of those were over 19 pounds.

The biggest Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbow was a 21-pounder caught by Jai Kim, Fullerton, on a meal worm at Levitz' Corner Saturday, but a 20.8-pounder was landed by Ray Sell, Cerritos, on a nightcrawler off the Sandy Beach, and a 20.4-pound trout was caught by Travis Guenther, Seal Beach, on rainbow Crave with Crave Gravy. Jesus Palafox, Jr, San Fernando, caught a 19.8-pounder on Crave.

In spite of the number of big trout landed, there are bigger fish yet to be caught, fish that will break the current lake and state record of 26.08-pounds.

"There are still two or three out there that'll break the record, but they haven't been caught yet," said Gary Wilhite, assistant manager at Santa Ana River Lakes. "They've been broken off a bunch. These regulars think they can catch `em on two-pound test, but that ain't going to happen. Those are just big, big fish -- they're every bit of 28 pounds."

The biggest fish are in Chris' Pond, which was planted with over 9,000 pounds of trophy-sized trout last week for the special Crave event. While a couple of tons of those trophy fish have been caught, the biggest fish are obviously still swimming around in the lake.

While the trophy rainbows are still the big draw, and most anglers expect a new lake and state record will probably be caught within the next week, there is already a buzz at the lake about the plants of steelhead trout that will be stocked in SARL by the ton for two special events Feb. 20-23 and Feb. 27 through March 2.

The steelhead are renounced for their aerial, hard-fighting abilities, and these pink-meated trout will go into SARL for the first time this season starting next week.

The lakes are open seven days a week. Anglers can fish from 6 a.m. to 4 pm. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each pass has a five-fish limit.
