every state has thier own rendition of its biggest Ice Fishing Event of the year.

Tip-Up Town is michigans claim to ice fishing fame. Below I will post our info for the 2007 event. but for now I would like to ask you what your state's biggest ice fishing event is, when, who sponcers it, so on and so on....

Here is a bit of news on this years proceedings.

September 12th, Houghton Lake, MI. The Executive Committee for Tip-Up Town USA 2007 is pleased to announce the availability of the 2007 badge – and introduce the new TUT mascot, Tip! The badge is required for admission to the winter fun and events that happen annually on and around Houghton Lake. Dates for the 57th Tip-Up Town USA are 19-21st January and 26-28th January and the $5 price of the badge represents wonderful value for the wide range of fun and games on offer each weekend.

Dave DenBoer, President of the Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce and member of the Executive Committee tells us more about Tip: “Last year we ran a drawing contest asking local and visiting children to draw designs for the 2007 badge. The winning entry was done by a visitor to TUT named Emily Sanders, then aged 9 and featured a cute character we have now named our mascot Tip.

“ Local artist, Mary Conklin, created the final badge design based on Emily’s drawing and Tip became a reality! Emily and her family will join us again this year at both the Kick-Off event planned for January 6th and the festival itself. Tip will be featured in a number of activities during Tip-Up Town in 2007 and beyond.

PJ Steeby goes on to explain: “Our focus in 2006 was ‘Fun for Kids of All Ages’ and we are continuing to build on this in a number of ways in 2007. Our theme this year is ‘Cartoons’ and we are introducing some changes based on what we heard from locals and visitors alike last year.”

Some of the changes to look out for in 2007 include: [ul] [li]Vintage snowmobile racing on Saturday and Sunday the first weekend [li]Motorcycle ice racing on Saturday and Sunday the second weekend [li]Tip-Up Town will stay open on Saturdays until the firework display takes place [li]The Carnival and Prize Wheel are both being re-introduced, due to popular demand [li]Renew your wedding vows at the TUT Wedding Chapel [li]Plus lots of other favorites including the Polar Bear Dip, Family Fun Tent and Ice Carving.[/li][/ul]

[#000000][font "Arial"]Anglers from as far away as Venezuela, China and Australia were among the 11,300 participants in the 16th Annual Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza held this past Saturday, January 21st 2006.[/font][/#000000]

[#000000][font "Arial"]The move to Round Lake had some concerned about the possibility of catching as many fish as in the past on Gull.[size 2] It took only moments after the noon start to alleviate this concern as organizers watched the line at the weigh in tent grow to nearly 100 yards longs.[/size][size 2] More than 1000 fish were registered by the time the cannon signaled the end of fishing at 3:00pm.[/size][/font][/#000000]

[#000000][font "Arial"]Volunteers from the local Walleye Alliance, T.I.P. and regional DNR assisted the Jaycees with handling fish and report good success in returning fish back to the lake.[size 2] The fish caught ranged from mere inches to Jake Scherer’s 1st place Tulibee that weighed 2.22 pounds.[/size][size 2] Scherer, of Foley, MN was awarded a Ford F-150 4X4 pickup as top angler.[/size][/font][/#000000]

[#000000][font "Arial"]Earning $10,000 cash was Christopher Smith from St. Cloud, MN.[size 2] His 0.38-pound perch matched the weight of five other anglers but due to the time registered, landed him in 100th place. Walleye, perch, crappie and tulibee made up the bulk of the fish registered.[/size][size 2] No northern pike or eelpout found their way to the scales this year.[/size][/font][/#000000]

[#000000][font "Arial"]The Jaycees were also happy with the turnout, which ranks as one of the highest in the Extravaganza’s history, and are looking forward to donating the proceeds to charities.[size 2] Seventy percent of the funds raised will benefit the camper’s at Confidence Learning Center, an outdoor education and recreation facility for persons with disabilities. The remaining dollars will benefit an array of programs from the Brainerd Lakes Area.[/size][size 2] The Jaycees will announce donations once the tournament’s financials are audited.[/size][/font][/#000000]

Anyway those are three of the major ones stated above, to go along with alot of smaller ones that go on. Also something people that have never seen it may find interesting, on Upper Red Lake on an average weekday there are 2000+ people out icefishing and on a saturday or sunday there are usually 5000+ people out there. When you are driving out, you think you see the other shoreline, but it is actually a line of icehouses out in the middle of the lake. Lake of the woods also gets alot of fishing pressure, but nothing like URL.
