Lake Mead Friday
#1
Friday, 12/29/06- Headed to the lake today hoping to get an education. You see, I want to learn how to fish the trout plant at North Saddle Cove. What better way to become proficient at this specialized skill than to get out on the water and observe the masters practicing their skills! Well I was late to class. Did'nt wake up until 7:00 am and was not on the water until 9:00 am. Finally rolled into Saddle Cove to find out the trout had already been dumped in at about 8:00 am. A fine fleet was in the process of attempting to lure nice big stripers into their possession. Anglers were chucking big swimbaits everywhere a "cow" might possibly be. Others were trolling in and out of the cove as well as outside in deeper water. Lets also not forget the shore fishermen, some wearing waders and hip deep in that 56 degree water, tossing their assortment of lures in hopes of a jackpot. Several guys had nine foot rods that allowed them to sail their presentations half way across the cove! All these guys had it figured out, and that is exactly what I needed. I joined right in, throwing my big rainbow trout swimbait about a million times.....nothing. Switch to a smaller swimbait, then to a bigger one.....nothing. Trolled a while......nothing. Went back to cast and retrieve.....nothing. At about 11:30 am. stowed all the gear for the windy ride in. Back at the ramp I compared my notes with Stripercraze, similar techniques, similar lures, etc. One big difference, he caught a nice 7 lb. fat striper. Hows that make me feel? Like I need to get back out there and study again!

The thing you'll get to know is that you'll make hundreds of casts, to hopefully hook a couple fish...

I'm working on the boat this week and hope to make it out by the plant next week.
