Lake Mead New Years Day
#1
Monday, 01/01/07- Hit the water at about 7:30 am. Noticed a lot of gull activity around the ramp. Soon found out why. Someone had cleaned four nice sized stripers and tossed the remains in the shallow water right where boats are launched. Wondered if maybe someone had been fishing in the harbor late at night.

Great morning to be out on the water!

Headed out to the ole honey hole to catch a few dinks. Found four other boats in the area. Guess it is a honey hole for a lot of guys. Anchored in about 70 feet of water, started to chum. Set out two poles, one with anchovy, one with shad. To my surprize, the anchovy out performed the shad. Maybe this bag of home frozen shad bait was not to these small stripers high standards, or perhaps the Wal-Mart anchovies were particularly good this trip. Anyway, ended up using five bags of Wal Mart's best, saved my shad for another day.

Small, fat, bait-robber that lived to fight another day!

Sixteen made it into the box this morning, many really little ones were released. Fish Tacos tonight!

What a fine way to spend New Years Day.

Those little bait-robbers keep you busy until the larger ones show up. How do you cook the fish for the tacos? Sometimes the smaller ones fight harder than the larger ones. It looked like a great way to start the new year.

Here's one way I enjoy those little stripers:

Striper Tacos

Small striper fillets cut up into small chunks
Ground Cumin (I like a lot)
Fresh chopped cilantro (about a bunch or two)
Fresh chopped pepper (any type, I like jalepeno, and it does'nt take much!)
Dash of salt
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
White corn tortillas
Any other toppings that you like on a taco

Pour EVOO into a bowl (enough to coat the fish), add striper chunks, cumin, chopped cilantro, chopped pepper, and salt. Mix up and set aside to marinate in fridge.

In a pan on med. heat (I like cast iron), stir in fish mixture and continue stiring until the striper chunks flake and are cooked all the way through. It does not take long!

Serve hot striper mixture on warm white corn tortillas. I like to add a slice of fresh avocado to mine along with a favorite green salsa.
Enjoy!
