Ice at Bird Island?
#1
Can you walk out to Bird Island on the ice right now? What are the odds of getting into some big cats out there?

I know that the ice is VERY thick at the north end of the lake and in the harbors, but I haven't ventured out to Lincoln Beach yet this year.

How far of a walk is that anyway? I've never gone to the island from the south side, only from one of the main marinas in a boat.

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing.  Then I retired.  Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

The closest access to Bird Island is from the north dike at Lincoln Beach or perhaps the shoreline near the springs in the same general area. It is over 2 miles (some have claimed it is over 2 1/2 miles) out there as the crow flies. If my memory serves me correctly, several years ago a group of anglers got stranded (and were safely rescued) when a large chunk of ice broke off north of Lincoln Beach and they went floating across Utah Lake. I have no idea what the odds are of you getting a large cat out there this time of year, but definitely higher than at Strawberry or The Great Salt Lake! [Wink]

[black][size 3]It could be possible to walk out to Bird Island, but it is over 2 miles out there from Lincoln Beach. It would also be possible to get an ATV or Snowmachine out that far. But there are a couple of considerations you should be aware of before hand.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]First, if you broke down out there, it could be a long long hike for self recovery of your machine. [/size][/black]
[black][size 3][/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Secondly, I know of three springs between Bird Island and Lincoln Beach - two of which are warmer water(there could be others as well). Those areas could be of concern as far as stability of the ice there goes, and the weight of an ATV should it happen to cross that ice may be too much to be supported. [/size][/black]

[black][size 3]I would urge caution before venturing out that far on Utah Lake ice. [/size][/black]

Thanks for the quick replies...I'm out.

I think I'll stick to fishing Bird Island from a boat...in the middle of the summer!

I seen tracks from a car that drove across Utah State Park Harbor last week on the camera . Just load up the truck and go . [Wink]J/K Really , there are springs all over in that lake , so use caution .
