Ok....I know the members on here like to share their opinions......
I just acquired my first fishing boat, my first trolling rod and my first trolling reel. I would like to load the reel up with lead core line for those times I want to get down deep.
However, as this is my first set up like this I have no idea what I am looking for in lead core line. Any advice? Any pertinent information I need to know before I run out and just buy a spool of lead core line?
I am a trout fisherman (and a serious wannabe cat fisherman) so how heavy of line should I get? I have a new spool of 27 lb? Is this what I need or is it even good for anything?
Thanks in advance for any info and advice and opinions you are ready to share.

[black]Just read your question, and still have some questions. Is the line that you already have a lead core line?[/black]

If not, and it's mono. that's pretty heavy for trout and catfish fishing.

Is your rod/reel setup for trolling?

With that said, let me make some assumptions, and just pass on to you some information that I have. Lead core line comes in various weights/strengths runs from about 10 to 50 pound test. The smaller would be adequate for your purposes as far as strength is concerned.

Lead core is a good way to get your baits down to where you want them, after using lead core for a while, you will know how much line to let out, and at what speed to troll.

If you start looking for information on lines other than lead core, you will find that there are many, many opinions on material, brand, and weight.

I'm sure that there are many members on here who will respond to your questions, and they have much more experience with lead core than I do.

OK, I have a couple questions as well. Instead of using a lead core line, why not just purchase a couple downriggers and call it a day? Downriggers will do a few things for you:
1. Take the guess work out of depth
2. Efficiently get your bait to the depth you want
3. Allow you to use standard fishing line
4. Give you more control of your lures/bait
5. Hook is automatically set when you get a strike, no matter the speed you are trolling
6. Additional rod holder on each rigger
You can get a couple downriggers from cabelas for right around 50 or 60 bucks a piece. Well worth the money. You don't need those big fancy riggers that are used in saltwater. I would seriously consider this before you spool up with that stuff.
Now, if you want to use a mono line, you can spool up with 20 lb Ande or something along those lines. That will work for any catfish in the US, and shouldn't be too heavy for trout. Regardless, you can always use a lighter leader if need be.
Let us know if there is anything else we can help out with! Good luck!
