My ODC made the dreaded SHHHHH sound
#1
[font "Times New Roman"][size 3]Hey all, some of you know this already form the Utah board, but I thought I would share with my fellow tubers as well.

I was headed down to Southern Utah for a few days of Bass fishing last week. In my typical pre-trip routine I aired up my ODC420 just of 3/4 of the way to check everything out. I was in my garage doing this as usual when all of a sudden I hear the dreaded SHHHHHHHHH and I see the cover move a bit. So I deflate her and unzip there it is about 4 inches from the top of the left side bladder the seam has separated about 3/8 of an inch. Totally un-patchable. My baby was only 6 months old that has been very well taken care of and still looks new. So off to Cabela's I go as that is where I purchased it from. I had my order number in hand, not knowing what to expect I go in and politely tell the nice lady at the store what happened and she said to go get a new tube and they would be happy to exchange it. I go back look to see what the have and decide since I just got a tax return and have a little mad money saved up I was going to get something a little nicer. (Remember I loved this thing, and know crap does happen. But with my life on the line I only give one chance pretty much.) So I tell the sales me I would like one of those shiny new North Fork H3's. Go up front pay the lady and off I go to catch fish. I will give a review of the H3 after another trip or two. I have spent two days on some calm and some very rough water and so far all I can say is WOW.

I also want to give a shout out to Cabela's for taking care of me with no fuss.

I will put a couple of pics with it field rigged to get me buy until I could get home to set everything up again.[/size][/font]

I would hardly call the way it looked this weekend worth even mentioning, but i was able to carry my rods and have my sonar so it was good. I am starting to get the feel of this whole jigging thing works.[Tongue] Be sides it is not the quantity but the quality. If i get real desperate i can always go to the Unitas and float salmon eggs through the undercuts to catch a few hatchery pets.

Gee wiz i can not even be a pround papa showing off the new baby. I may just have to forget to bring you over your cigar. [Tongue][Wink][Tongue]

[cool][#0000ff]Hold the cigar. Can't abide 'em. I been knowed to turn 'em into suppositories for offending smokers.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You can bring the new baby over for show and tell though when you come to claim your hat. I'll be careful not to "burp" it, like your ODC.[/#0000ff]

i caught my first bass on a jig and grub over the weekend. i didn't really feel a tick, i think the guy hit it on the way up. i'm still learning. plus the pond i was fishing has a lot of bass and they're hungry so it was kinda like shooting fish in a barrel. got my personal best though so that made me happy.

Yea that is how they were hitting down there not that double tap tap but more of one bump. 2 of the 3 I thought i actually had snagged in the structure. The 3rd one was very solid and I new it was a hit. The other thing I was told you have to pay great attention as bass it fast. I have only caught a few of them, here in Ut we do not have a lot, but we have a few.

[cool][#0000ff]I have been fishing with some kind of jigs, in fresh water and salt water, for most of my LO-O-O-O-O-O-ONG fishing career. I probably fish plastic or fibre goodies, on a jig head, more than 75% of the time on almost all waters, for all species.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It works, but there is a lot to it. It is more than "chuck and chance it". And, jigs are not "idiot" lures, like some cast and retrieve lures are known. It takes a measure of skill and some knowledge of fish and their habits to consistently do well with jigs.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fishing with jigs also requires good sensitive tackle and a good feel for what is going on at the other end of your line. I call it "touch" fishing. You not only try to maintain complete feel for any change in "the force", but you watch your line and your rod tip constantly. A lot of strikes go totally undetected by rookies and anglers who do not pay attention to business.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]One of the things most good jig fishermen have in common is the tendency to use a wrist snap hookset whenever they even suspect they have a whack. You might have a lot of "whiffs"...with nothing on the other end of the line...but you will hook a lot of fish that you would never hook otherwise.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]My jig fisherman's mantra is "Hook sets are free".[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here is a PDF file document (attached) of a writeup I did on Jig Fishing for a fishing buddy friend a few years ago. He was also trying to learn more about jigging at that time. He is now well known for his ability to put fish in the boat or on the ice by using jigs and has helped instruct quite a few other newbies in the fine art of jiggin'.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]As with many things, reading is only the first part. Whatever you pick up by reading, watching TV programs, the Internet or on the water lessons, you still have to practice that stuff...the right way. Jig fishing is largely a matter of personal skill and developing the FEEL. That only comes with practice and experience. But, once you start to score regularly, you build your confidence, and fishing with confidence always helps you catch more fish.[/#0000ff]

Thanks for the tips Majja and thanks for the writeup TD. It's hard when you're not catching anything because you don't know if you're doing something wrong or if they fish just aren't biting. Like you said though, practice, practice, practice.

Darn...looks like I'll have to fish more[cool]

Great reading TD. I was wondering what I was going to do this afternoon [Smile] Already on page 6 of 57. All of this stuff should be in a big ole' coffee table book.
