A Day at Lake Manitoba

Well, I found this spot near Lundar, on Lake Manitoba, and set out to catch some pike. I was disapointed on the Pike fishing, but the day was far from lost. Switching to good ol' worm on a hook, I caught a couple little perch. I cut up one of them for bait, and was shortly into a 14" Bullhead, qualifying for the Manitoba Master Angler award program. Next up on the perch bait, was a 31" Freshwater Drum, another qualifier. 7 more bullheads, all qualifying, followed before I ran out of perch. I switched back to worms, and ended the day with a couple more drums. Not fish I usualy target, but I'm not going to argue with a day that lands me two more species for the record book, and another specialist badge [cool]

Although she was fat with eggs for spawning, I kept one bullhead for the frying pan. She was greedy, and got hooked deep in the throat. Same with one of my smaller drums. A successful day on Lake Manitoba.

How do those freshwater Drum fight ? Like the Red Drum ?

Mostly like a water-logged tree branch, with the occasional slow run (walk?). Not the most exciting fish in the world. But when the big one ran, it was slow and steady, pulling line off the reel like a truck in low gear...

Awesome report Dubie. I wish we had those freshwater drum here. It would be nice to have a few different species to target, or atleast to surprise you when you reel in the line. LOL, it's pretty cut and dry in the local rivers around here. []

Well, there's 30 "Sport" fish (some people would call some of them trash fish. But a fish on the line is a fish on the line to me) recognized by the Travel Manitoba Master Angler program. In the Red River alone you could go after at least 18 of them. An hour or two from most towns you could easily go after the rest. Plus they have the added fun of friendly compition and an online record book and an anualy published book for qualifying "Master Angler" fish, complete with Bronze pin for a first time, Silver Pin for 5 species entered, and gold pin for 10 different species, and 30 different specialist pins if you catch 5 qualifying fish from any one species.[cool]. It just makes the fishing that much more fun around here, and incentive to get out on the water as much as possible.
