Random questions for you pro's
#1
As you've prolly read from my previous threads, I'm kinda a born-again fisherman. And now I have a few lil' fishin' buddies, too.

At any rate, a few questions for the pro's and experienced anglers here:

1- can anyone direct me to a link on the proper way to clean and filet fish? I've tried this many times but never got it right. Looking to clean/filet trout, panfish and the occassional cat or bass.

2- waders... wouldn't an angler in waders spook fish? If I wade up to a fallen tree in a lake for crappie or bass, wouldn't the fish be spooked off? Does anyone even use waders for anything beyong FF'ing streams anymore?

Edited to add:
3- When fishing from a canoe, what the best way to keep the fish I intend to keep? Dragging a stringer or basket is unrealistic while paddling. I've seen guys fill a ice chest with ice and throw their catch on ice. Live wells in canoes don't work too well. Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Great question. Thanks for sharing.

As far as filleting your fish, there are some good instuctions with pics on the recipe board. There are different instructions for different types of fish.

As far as the waders go, they don't necessarily spook that fish but do enhance their senses to what is in their environment.

Canoe fishing can be a challenge sometines. A far as keeping your catch fresh, I would preferr to keep the days catch in an ice chest with ice.[cool]

I also prefer to keep my catch on ice. I put them right on the ice and then clean them as soon as possible... then back on the ice they go until I can filet them, eat them, or freeze them. I think dragging them on a stringer is okay in cold water situations, but I hate to see a stringer full of fish that have been sitting in bathtub warm water all day! I'm a little more finicky than the average guy, but I don't eat fish if I'm not sure they were properly taken care of. (I don't ever buy fish... I catch my own to eat or don't eat it at all) I also would suggest having a seperate cooler for your drinks and food. Nothing worse than opening a can of coke, putting it to your lips, and smelling fish! But again, I'm more finicky than most! LOL

As far as the waders go, I imagine you'd be fine but approach a likely spot (like a log or whatever) with caution. I guess it would be just like stream fishing, be careful not to spook the fish out of the hole before you get a shot at catching them.

Hope this helps! Check out the recipe board like tubeN2 suggested, and keep the questions coming!

Take care, bkidder

[black]2. Keep your distance, take your time on the approach, and move really slow.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]3. Ice is the answer. It also keeps the fish nice and firm for easier filleting.[/black]

[cool][green]Hey there captn160 - if wading works for us fly flingers why shouldn't it work for all other type of fisherman. Wouldn't float tubes, boats and the like spook the fish? If you thrash around a lot yes in deed. Just take it easy and you will do fine. In fact you might just feel closer to nature being part of the water.[/green]
