hey, im new here and in the fishing scene inn general.

i grew up fishing on my grandpas pond with live bait. ive always loved fishing, but when i tried to fish nearby rivers with friends, i never really had much success and that detered me from the sport in general. i just bought lures that looked cool, and i never knew all the factors that played a part in selecting a how and what to fish with.

i just got back from my first real fish trip in arkansas fishin trout on the white river and i loved it. i went out with a great guide for two days and asked as many questions i could and soaked it all up. now i feel like i can go back to those nearby rivers and catch a few, but at the same time i feel like theres so much i need to learn.

im just wondering when yall first started out, whats some key knowledge/tricks/technique that really helped yall become better anglers that gave yall a better chance at landing a fish with every cast.

lastly, what is a Rapala Deep Runner 9? i found one in the river and i cleaned it up and put new hooks on it and it looks pretty good. is it a rapala jerkbait? im just curious so i know how to fish it in the future but my main concern of the post is the former part so im gunna shut up and let yall tell me how tocatch fish thanks

Rapalas come in different styles and colors. There are floating, suspending, sinking and diving. There are straight ones, curved ones and even segmented ones.

Some rattle others don't.

Which one would you like me to expand on??[cool]

im familiar with rapala. i was just unsure about this one type of rapala that i found at the bottom of the river. its called a Deep Runner 9. ive seen one brand new in the box and the box was labled MR-9(but it didnt say what kind of bait it was).... ya know like the Countdown series is CD and the X rap is XR. im just wondering what kind of bait it is so that i can fish it the way it was made to be fished... i dont wanna be reelin in at a steady pace if its a jerkbait.

as for powerbait... right now im really into gettin good at the artificial thing. like making fish strike on reflexes when they arent hungry, you cant do that with powerbait. artificials seem a lot more fun to me, regardless if powerbait will catch me more fish

well try some rooster tail inline spinners or rapala cd-7 or a small jig... i fished all of those with success, caught some nice rainbows with all three of those lures... its real fun to be reelin in and feel a nice trout strike the bait... you gotta spend at least one day with some artificials next time you go fiishin for trout.

The MR-9 is the deep runner. That one isn't good to use in a shallow stream or fast river because it will get stuck in the rocks in a hurry.

The Countdown series will work better for that situation. You can use the deep runners in a lake either with med/fast retrieval or even low speed trolling.[cool]

i figured that much since i found it at the bottom of a shallow river...lol. im curious what classification do lures like the countdown and the deep runner fall into? you know like spinnerbait, jig, jerk, crank, buzz, baits.

also, could u give me some instances to use it? i can think maybe standing at the shore of a point and chuckin it out as far as i could and just reel it back? ideas? also how deep does it run?

The runner is actually in the crank bait category and the count down is more in the jerk bait category.

With the runner, it is best to cast out and crank it down to the depth that you want it to swim in. They usually have a diving depth to about 8 to 10 feet depending on the speed in which you reel it in.

The Countdown lets you allow it to sink to the desired depth and slowly bring it back. Stop reeling and give it a jerk. Reel a little bit and stop etc etc.....[cool]

cool, thanks for answering all of my questions. i know ive been askin alot but when you say crank it down to the depth i want it at, how do i control how deep it goes? if im gunna be retreiving it until my line is reeled in all the way, wouldnt the big lip just push it down further and further until my line is reeled completely in?

Once you get it to the depth, start reeling very slow to hold it there.[cool]

I love fishing with crankbaits. There are so many different kinds and different ways to fish them that it is tough when you are just starting out. I find that ugly lures catch a lot of fish. I think too many lures are made to catch the fisherman and not fish.

One of the biggest problems I had when I started fishing was being afraid to fish crankbaits where you need to (I just read an article by Mike Ioconelli that said he had the same problem so I don't feel too bad http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/iaco...baits.html) You need to catch the most fish on crankbaits when you cast into thick structure. The problem? It is hard to do that when you pay five dollars for a lure and you are worried about losing it. I call it "snag-fright".

Also with crankbaits, you need a good variety in order to consistently catch fish in varying situations and that can get costly. That's why I started making my own lures. It is more fun and it doesn't cost anything.

lol, i know exactly what your talkin about... ive lost 2 rapala dt-6's cuz i thought the purpose was to make the bait runn along the bottom and bounce off of [#ff0000]stuff[/#ff0000], but it doesnt bouce off half the time, it just sticks to the bottom im gunna give that article a read thanks

I can't count the times I had to go climbing into the water after a lure that cost me an arm and a leg. I wouldn't have minded if the thing caught fish.
