Bachelor Party in the Boulder Basin
#1
Hello everyone:

Looks like my good friend is going to have his bachelor party at Mead during the last weekend of August (8/23-26). We were looking to rent 1 or 2 houseboats out of Temple Bar, but unfortunately, they don't have any houseboats available.

This leaves us with renting a houseboat(s) out of Callville Bay. The last time I fished the Boulder Basin was during the Memorial Day Weekend in 2006. I know many of you are experts (especially Baysport) in fishing that part of Lake Mead so I wanted to ask some questions to ensure a successful fishing trip. Your feedback would be most appreciated.

1. Where should I fish? [I have a houseboat so I'll be fishing from the back while it is anchored to the shoreline. The houseboat is 59' long.]

2. Attached is a satellite map/photo of the area I'm looking to anchor and fish. There are three yellow markers, which I have placed on the map to designate (1) Upper Gov't Wash; (2) Lower Gov't Wash; and (3) Hole 33. How accurate are my markers?

3. Is there still good striper action at Hole 33?

4. Is there anywhere to anchor a houseboat near Hole 33?

5. During the day, is there a lot of boat traffic? If so, are they recreational boaters or fishermen?

6. Are there any other alternative spots for good striper fishing where I can anchor a houseboat to the shoreline? [For example, how is the Upper and Lower Gov't Wash in terms of striper fishing.]

7. Are there a lot of shore fishermen and campers along the Upper and Lower Gov't Wash?

8. What depth are you finding stripers? I'm assuming they go deep during the day. If so, how deep?

9. Is it "really hot" on the lake? Does the wind help cool you down?

10. Is it worthwhile to fish during the day while the houseboat is anchored to the shoreline?

11. How's the fishing at Boxcar Cove or Crawdad Cove?

I realize I've asked a lot of questions but I just want to make sure I cover all my bases. Thanks again for any feedback or advice you may have for me.

Best regards,

Paul

Paul,

Giant two day bass tournament out of Calville bay that weekend with probably 100+ boats. Also all the areas you marked are way out of the water except the one on the 33 side. The 33 side has some deep pockets you can houseboat in still. You will probably get some company in whatever cove you go to.

Now my question is, is having a bachelor party on lake mead going to be similar to cruise ships in international waters ie. anything goes? [Wink]

Thanks for the heads up, Tim. Oh yeah, we plan on offering all sorts of gaming on the houseboat....hold em, craps, black jack, even monopoly.

Anyway, I appreciate you letting us know about the heavy boat traffic for the weekend. We may head toward the Narrows on Saturday then.

So even though the areas I marked (Upper and Lower Gov't Wash) are way out of the water, can we still anchor a houseboat in that area OR is the water level there really shallow? Ideally, we want to anchor the houseboat to a shoreline that has a good drop. I typically like the back of the houseboat to sit in about 20-30 feet above the lake floor. How much more land is exposed on the various islands on my map? For example, could I anchor the houseboat on Sand Island? Is there good striper fishing on Sand Island or islands in general? Or am I better off sticking to the shorelines?

Finally, did I accurately mark Hole 33? Is there any way (or marker) that let's me know that I am at Hole 33?

Any further feedback to my questions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Best regards,

Paul
