Fishing near Helena MT--recommendations
#1
Looking to fly fish near Helena or Butte Montana--an hour or so drive would be the max. I will be flyfishing and prefer to target the trout--size of fish is a consideration (if I can go for big boys, that's great...if not, I'll survive.) Not really looking for combat fishing, or urban locales, mostly interested in any sized stream with a place to flip the wand.

I know this is the Utah board, but many of you fish around the mountain west. PM if you prefer. ANY help (any direction at all really) would be very appreciated.

Look no further than the Missouri River between Wolf Creek and Craig, about a 45 minute drive north of Helena on the interstate. Its ONLY the BEST dry fly trout river in Montana!! And you can use nymphs too, but you won't need to during the morning hours. I wish I could go with you!

Trust me, I've fished it for the last 20 years, and used to spend nearly the whole month of August on it. Tricos are thicker than snot every morning, caddis will crawl all over you every evening (and the trout will be eatin' 'em too!), and enough bugs during the day to keep you busy. Fish it from sunrise through the morning, and again the last 2 or 3 hours of daylight. Don't be afraid to fish a fly twice the size of the naturals either. Try a #16 cdc caddis right in the middle of the trico hatch! During the mid-day, throw an adult damsel fly. Use a very long leader, get good dead-drifts casting downstream to the fish, and hold on!

It's my favorite peice of trout water in America, by a landslide!
