Building upon the tradition of centuries of area harvest celebrations, Potato Creek State Park will conduct special programs focusing on the native prairie and harvest time, Sept. 29-30.
Activities start Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m., with a program on how prescribed burns are used to manage the park's restored prairie. Afternoon fun features a series of fall-themed craft programs, including making wooly bears, leaf-print bandanas, seed jewelry and a harvest wreath. Material fees for these programs range from $1 to $5. A scarecrow-building contest at 4 p.m. culminates the day. All of these activities are at the park's Nature Center.
Sunday morning, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m., visitors can walk through the restored prairie with the park naturalist to learn more about the rare prairie ecosystem. Sunday afternoon features the 2 p.m. Nature Center showing of the fascinating video "America's Lost Landscape: Tallgrass Prairie," which focuses on the prairie ecosystem and its history.
The normal park gate fee of $5 for Indiana vehicles and $7 for out-of-state vehicles will be charged. For more information, call (574) 656-8186.
