Steelhead around Riggins
#1
Hi all,
I am originally from Idaho (Rigby) and now live in Northern Utah because of work. I steelhead fish 2 or 3 times a year in Idaho. I usually fish from Middle/North fork, Salmon and all the way down to the Pahsimerio Hatchery.
I'm going with a buddy and fishing around Riggins. I was wondering if anyone can tell me about the area. What river/Section it is and any general information about the area and how far of a drive it is from town to hit fishable stretches. Also where is a good place to get updates of the Steelhead runs. I have been looking at Steelheader.net and the Idaho Fish and Game web pages so far. Is there any better source to find any information on the area and run counts?
Thanks

I'm not much of a steelhead fishermen myself but there are a few who post on this board. Maybe one of them would be willing to share some information. As you already know the Idaho F&G website gives regular updates. Good luck.

My advice is too check with the local guide shops in the area. Many of them post reports online. I'm headin' to the panhandle in February for the B run on a couple different rivers. It's all a crap shoot though. I was planning on the middle Rogue (Oregon) this month but canceled a month or so ago. I'm glad I did...they have had 3500 Salmon come up stream so far this year and it should have been 30,000. No Salmon, no eggs...no steelies! or at least very few. It has been a very weird season. I haven't seen anything like it in 15 years.

Fishing is picking up on the Salmon at Riggins, but according to the Coeur d' Alene paper, the current hot spot is the Clearwater for the big ones. They report that some are hooking 8-12 steelies a day. The only ones struggling are the fly fishermen. You can go to the Coeur d'Alene Press site and look in columns for the fishing column. Mike

K1,
Thanks for the information, 12+ a day, I couldn't imagine how great that would be.

The rivers right there at the end of town so you should be able to start fishing there and work your way down river I've fished it twice, not much luck but it makes a nice vacation. long way to go but thats the price for the sneaky stealie. good luck and have fun

I didn't end up making it with my friend. They went and didn't have any luck to speak of other then a few little trouskies. That is alot of driving from here to catch a little rainbow, but what can you do? I am going up to Salmon this weekend and fish so I will post the results when I make it back.
Thanks all for your input...........

real long drive you need at least 2-3 full days to make it worth your whileplus the catch rates look pretty bad last time I looked
