the Berry - CCE report - 12-27-07
#1
Had to work first today so didn't get up until 3:30pm or so. Normally I wouldn't think of going to the berry so late but wanted to give it a try. Went to CCE and decided to walk as far east as I could pull my sled.

Ice was about 6 inches and I fished in 20-30 ft of water. Set up shop and as soon as the first jig went down, whamo, a nce 22 incher. The next 2 hours saw lots of fish and after dark I still got one every once in a while. A few came off at the hole. Nearly every fish that showed up on my radar hit and I hooked and landed more than half. I landed somewhere around 12 or so in the 3.5 hours that I fished. Not bad but I wish I could have been there at sun up instead.

Some guys near by said that they had slayed them all day and it was slower by the time I got there. Next week - Yuba and back to strawberry.

The snow was a little thick for the 100 yard walk to the lake but once on the lake there is very litle snow and pulling a sled is much easier.

Jacksonman,
Great report of a great day. I hope to get up there this weekend. One question, did anyone have a snowmobile out on the ice yet. I don't want to be the first. A little scared I guess[mad]. If I can't take the snowmobile out, I may as well not pull the dang thing up there.

Thanks,
Ripleyred

Should I bring snowshoes if I decide to venture forth?

I didn't see any snowmobiles but I would think that they would be fine up there now. There was about 6 inches and it has been dang cold. By tomorrow there should be a good 7 or so.

So you going to let us tag along to Yuba sometime - maybe on the 3rd or 4th?[Tongue]

22 inches is pretty weak sauce for the berry - my brother grabbed my line in attempt to land a likely 25" and snapped my line. I forgave him because he is young and learning. I'll try to do better to make you proud next week.[cool]

i hit chicken creek east this morning from about 9:30 to about 3:00. i tried out my new ice fishing camera and could see the fish grab the bait and know when to hook em. it was really cool. but we weren't really in a good spot because not too many fish came by. but we caught a total of 4, had 3 at the hole but got off. came home just in time before the real storm blew in. the biggest one we caught was 21 1/2". too bad not a keeper. the other three were about 18" or 19".[Wink]

i did see snowmobiles today on the ice ripelyred. but they were more towards the shore. they weren't too far out. but when they came driving by the ice would just pop like crazy. pretty crazy. but i guess 6" is thick enough for snowmobile.
