The Tennessee Wildlife Federation (TWF) announced today it has retained past TWF President (2004-2006) Tom Scott of Chattanooga to coordinate efforts for its recently-formed, statewide Camouflage and Casting Coalition.
"We needed someone with the right experience to help re-unite and galvanize the state's sportsmen and women for TWF, and considering Tom's experience he's a great fit," said Executive Director Mike Butler. "He comes from an affiliate background and he understands the issues and challenges we face as outdoorsmen in Tennessee."
The Camouflage and Casting Coalition was created by TWF as an update to the affiliate program that included Tennessee's hunting and fishing clubs and related organizations in its membership. The coalition was also established to catalyze grassroots advocacy on wildlife and related issues.
"The Camo and Casting Coalition is the collective voice of Tennessee's sportsmen and women," stated Scott. "Building an effective Coalition will be paramount in addressing the needs of hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts, and ensuring that our voice remains both strong and effective."
A Tennessee native from Chattanooga, Scott has been a lifelong outdoor enthusiast.
Prior to serving as TWF President, Scott served as President of Chattanooga's Highland Sportsman's Club, a Federation affiliate. Additionally, he has served as an advocate for TWF at the Tennessee State Legislature, and on behalf of the State Wildlife Grants Program at the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C. Most recently, Scott has served as TWF's volunteer project coordinator for the annual Cherokee Crane Days Wildlife Festival at Hiwasse Refuge - the largest wildlife viewing event in Tennessee.
"The outdoors we love so dearly demands our constant attention. We inherited a 'golden era' of outdoor opportunity from the previous generation of conservation-minded sportsmen, and I believe we must maintain that same vigilant mind set to secure even better opportunities for the generations that follow us," added Scott. "One lesson I have learned regarding wildlife policy is that good things don't just happen by themselves, you have to work hard for them. The payoff is worth the effort."
Mr. Scott will be contacting the TWF affiliate base and enlisting support for a variety of Camo and Casting Coalition duties - the first being to organize a strong turnout for TWF's Sportsmen's Day on the Hill, scheduled for March 19th, 2008.
"We need our Tennessee's best outdoorsmen and women to carry the message to our state legislators," said Scott. "This year alone, we have several important issues at stake, the foremost of which is to support the Constitutional Right to Hunt & Fish. We have made great strides, but must have a visible showing of support of hunters and anglers. It's our priority to make a solid impression to ensure the success of this bill."
The Camo and Casting Coalition will also be organizing statewide Sportsmen's Summits concurrently with TWF's new outdoor trade shows and annual meeting, scheduled for July 18-20 in Franklin, Tennessee and August 8-10 in Memphis. The Sportsmen's Summits will promote organization and action plans for outdoor priorities, and provide a forum for hunting, angling and related outdoor interests.
