Ok, for the fishing gadget guru's here's a new take on a spinning reel. It sounds like it might work, but does anyone have one yet so we can hear it first hand???

Might be worth a try at only $80.00. For me you can't beat Quantum with the magnetic bail actuator (no springs). The bail loop is made of titanium also and never gets out of shape.

I just read a report, sounds good. Wonder if drag is smooth ? As for the loop idea thats great.

I bet you could replace the drag with an after market one. I know Shimano sells wet drags (silicon grease with cloth drag washer). There is also Smooth Drag.

Sounds like it might be worth a look see but a little pricey at $90. Of course that includes S & H but a little too rich for my blood. It will be interesting to hear a report from someone that buys one[  ].

Hey thanks fishhound. I'm going to stop by and check one of those reels out. Hopefully they didn't put all their eggs in the design of the spool and put a decent drag system in it.

Doug Hannon (designer of the reel) is no slouch, known as "The Bass Professor" I'm sure he put as much into the drag as he did the spool. Doug is not a new commer also, he was one of the first serious Bass fishers to prefer the spinning reel to a casting. It makes sense that he would develop something like this.
As far as quality reels go, $100 is not alot of cash. Look at the price of a Shimano "Stella" or "Sustain". Stella's are like $500.

It is a non problem if the reel is spooled right, and the drag is not used much. Spinning reels twist the line when the drag is pulled and when reeling in. On the cast this cumlitive effect becomes apparant.
I often have to remove the lures from my rods and troll just the line to get the twist out at least once a full day of fishing.

My ice fishing reels loop all the time. Seems to be one of the more frequent problems. I'm not sure how you use them "wrong". I believe they've been spooled properly so what is the correct or incorrect use?
I know you shouldn't over -spool the reel and over-run the line during the free release, but what else??

1.What does "winding against the drag" mean. Sounds like this would only occur when a fish is pullin out line while you're reelin in. If so, I don't wind against the drag, but still get birds-nests occasionally. What's up with that?
5 of the 6 Cabela's reviews are stellar.
2. I read Hansen's site, and he talks about holding the looped part of the line (that occurred on the initial retrieve) onto the notched spool until the next cast. But what if more than one loop has formed on that initial retrieve?
Every time I go out in the boat, I promise myself that on the way back in for the day, I'll go slow, and let free line out of my reels in order to rid them of line twist. Never do it...

I saw video of him demo-ing this reel a couple years ago.. before it was ready for mass production in the market. It was kind of cool.. He would make a big rats nest there on the reel.. then cast it out... No snags.. it would un-wind itself.
Really kind of cool. I think I saw them on Youtube.. or maybe it was videos.google.com.
He has a whole series of them from the "Bass Professor" not good quality videos.. but the content is[cool]
