Ohio Coastal Atlas Project Wins National Environmental Education Award
#1
SANDUSKY, OH - The Ohio Coastal Atlas Project of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has been awarded a 2008 National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) Environmental Education Award.

The ODNR Office of Coastal Management coordinated production of the Coastal Atlas, which includes a printed edition, interactive DVD and the online Lake Erie GIS Map Viewer. The information in the Coastal Atlas was provided by many contributors, whose efforts are recognized for making the atlas such a valuable resource.

The Ohio Coastal Atlas is one of nine projects selected to receive 2008 NAEP awards. It is the only award winner from the Great Lakes Region.

"These outstanding National Environmental Award winners were selected from many truly excellent nominations after a detailed review and ranking of nominations, references, and supporting evidence," said NAEP President Jim Melton. "(Winners) were selected for their lasting contributions to improving environmental methods, improving the quality of the environment, and reducing impacts on the environment."

The Ohio Coastal Atlas Project, initiated in 2004, cartographically and visually depicts and explains a diverse collection of information compiled from county, state, lake and watershed-wide GIS data. It was written for a variety of users, including academics, land-use planners, scientists and developers.

"There is an increasingly strong link between natural resources and economic sustainability. The presence of abundant fresh water and healthy ecosystems is directly connected to Ohio's economic potential," said ODNR Director Sean D. Logan. "This atlas is a valuable tool for many individuals and businesses weighing expansion or relocation. It tells the full story of this great resource, and displays the opportunities available in Ohio's coastal region."

Free DVD copies of the Ohio Coastal Atlas are available from the ODNR Office of Coastal Management at coastal@dnr.state.oh.us or 419-626-7980. The interactive Lake Erie GIS Map Viewer as well as a downloadable version of the atlas can be found online by selecting the "GIS/Mapping" link at www.ohiodnr.com/coastal."
