Otter Creek Confidence Builder.

Had one of those great days where it all just comes together. Got down to O.C. at around 8:00 A.M. to find perfect conditions. Partly overcast, no wind, and just the right amount of open water. Count was 56 when I left at 3:30. Average size was 17 inches with a few pushing 4lbs. Also caught one 17 inch brown, 1/16 ounce, 1 1/2 inch tube jigs. Color didn't seem to matter.

Nice report BG, sounds like you had a good day. One
question if you don't mind, is the ice a long way from the shore or can you cast to it? WH2

But by 2:00, most of it was gone. But the fish are stacked on the gravel-type bottoms of almost every bay. Most the fish I caught were away from the ice edge in 4-8 feet of water. (Full cast)

Wow what a day you had! Wish i didnt have to work saturday.[Sad] I am definitly going down next saturday if the weather permits. Did you tip your jigs or did you fish them bare?

Except for ice fishing, I never tip my jigs. In my opinion it's like this: If fishing is slow, tipping doesn't help, and if fishing is good, you don't need to! However if fish are extra finicy I may cheat a little and smear a little smelly jelly. Only on plastics though. Later when the water warms and I switch to maribou jigs I never tip or use scents. It will ruin their action.

You make several good points there but sometimes they get a taste of the plastic or smell it and they either wont touch it or wont hold it long enough for a hookset. I never tipped till i moved to utah but i always do when i ice fish because i suck at it. Last fall i met up with fishound at the berry and i started out without tipping and i wasnt getting bites. When i tipped with chub meat i started catching fish. I guess what ever works for the fisherman go with it.

I went to Otter Creek on sunday. First time ever being there, wasnt sure where to fish. drove around and found the bird refuge i think. went back to the park area and the weather had not let up one bit. snowing sideways if you know what i mean. we didnt want to freeze and there was no place to park and fish from the truck so in our last efforts i tried a little spot that was to the left of where you pull in at, a little bay area that had ice off the shore about 10-15yds or so. i got out and told my friend to wait here, if i didnt get a bite on my second cast i was coming back and we were leaving. well i cast onto the ice, drug it off the ice and let it drop and WHAM, got a hit, took my powerbait. rebaited, casted and let it drop and WHAM this time she wasnt so lucky, FISH ON, i turned around to signal to my friend and she was already walking toward me with her pole. We were there after our limit only and we both had it within the hour easy. We probably could of stayed and C&R'd all day but thats not my thing and it was dang cold too. Worked out great but i sure do want to go back with the boat now. All rainbows, couple males, largest was 17in and the smallest was 14in. Good eatin size! They were loving the chartreuse PB. Couple took the worms. There was still ice visible on the center of the lake. Got some pics but i'm work right now, will try to post em when i get home.
