Socal Harbor Fish ID question
#1
I've been fishing in Huntington Harbor lately, and the other day i caught something i was unable to identify and haven't been able to find any fish descriptions that describe what i caught. I figure it wasnt nothing worth keeping, but i would still love to know what i caught [Smile]. It was about 16 inches long and about 3½ inches wide. weighed about 3½lbs. it was gold in color and had the same bodystyle of a mackerel or a jacksmelt. I havent got a picture of it, but i figure i'll probably end up catchin another in the next couple days, so i will try to update with a picture soon. anybody that has any ideas on what i might have hooked up on, i would love to hear from ya.

Thanks. [laugh]

Sounds like a Spanish Mack but a pic would really help...

What did the mouth look like on it?? Did it have little barbles like a Corbina? They are popular in that area especially when the water starts to warm back up a bit.

Here is a picture of a smaller one that I caught in Redondo Beach.

Good call, could be a short White Seabass or Orangemouth Corvina as they are showing more often. Who knows without a pic??? Maybe a Bonefish...

I would love to see a Bonefish in our waters. That would be some good flyswatter action.[cool]

At first, i thought it could be a WSB considering how i was fishing near a growout pen, but the forked tail and bronze carp-like color has me Confused. i didnt have a cam or i would've taken pics. i have a cam now, and i fish there quite often, so i will definitely photo the next one.

thx for your help.

With the forked tail that you described and being a Mackeral shape, and orangish appearance, I'm almost starting to think that it could be a Spanish Mackeral. I would sure need to see the picture to be positive.[cool]

Thanks for the responses. This week I am planning on going to lake hemet for some catfish, carp, and trout entertainment, and hopefully some good predator hunting as well. will be back on Sunday, and the tides are lookin good for a little huntington harbor fishing for sunday night and monday morn [fishin]. Hopefully I will have a couple good days and will have pics to show on monday eve. Thanks all for your input.
