Cool Cats at Willard 3/22/08

[cool][black][size 1][size 2][blue]Fellow tuber Majja and I launched from the north marina about 7:30 AM. The full moon just setting in the west seemed to be saying "Gonna git ya". Almost did.

Air temp 30...ice in the guides for awhile. Water temp 40 at launch, warming to 43 by the time we beached at 1. The light north breeze was chilly but not unfishable. Intermittent periods of glassy calm and light breezes...from all points of the compass before the morning was over.

WvBassChaser and a friend launched their float tubes right behind us and followed us out into the lake. But, they stayed closer to shore and went in a couple of times. Not sure if it was cold or "convenience" related. They finally got out and walked all the way back in after WV lost his rod over the side. Bummer.

Majja and I stuck it out. We dragged bait (minnows) on one rod while offering a buffet of all the different lures in our tackle boxes with the other rod. A couple of bumps that could have been carp, rocks or tuna. Couldn't prove it.

Worked from shallow to deep (12 feet) and back. Saw more fish on sonar than we caught. I brought in my first kitty about 9:15...my biggest of the day at 18". Nothing else for another hour or so. Then, I reached the area where TubeBabe and I usually do well on cats and wipers in warmer months. I caught three or four more kitties in quick succession as Majja came kicking closer to see what I was using in my "chum bag". I chased him away since he still smelled like skunk.

We stayed in that area for another hour or so before kicking back into the ramp. I finished up with 9 kitties caught but two were "culled". The rest were all "cookie cutters" at about 15 to 16 inches. Great eating size. I would rather have those than bigger ones. So, I DID keep a few. Sadly, Majja got in some hook setting practice but no reeling fish in practice.

Nary a wiper or walleye to be seed today. Only one boat trolled by, and they hadn't caught anything either. Nethier had the two bank tanglers fishing off the point of the north marina channel on the way back in.

Actually a pretty day. The wind was never a big problem. We did better than Mr. Moon said we would. Too bad about WV losing his rod.

Love the report! It gives me more incentive to continue some new mods of my own SFC.

[cool][#0000ff]What kinda mods are you considering?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]A lot of the gadgets, gizmos and goodies I have hanging off my craft are geared toward warm water angling for non-trout species...with spinning or baitcasting tackle.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Look forward to seeing what you have in mind. Also look forward to seeing some tubing reports from ya. Hope the "carp tunnel" problem is getting better.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah, we couldn't have asked for nicer weather, over all. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Might make mention about the last picture, that I was showing off by standing up on a shallow sandbar several hundred yards from shore. There is also a big rockpile nearby that you can see barely breaking the surface of the water. Definitely what you call "navigational hazards". You could blow out a fin if you hit them too hard...going too fast.[/#0000ff]

I'm working on my tube with kokanee fishing particularly in mind. As you know I fly fish a lot. Kokanee fishing requires spin and baitcast stuff so I'm going with that. I'm very nearly done and will post some pics as soon as it is finished. Vertical jigging and slow trolling with precise depth control are my two goals. The depth control is something that might be useful to some others. More compatible with the carpal tunnel thing. I'll explain soon. Can't wait.

Great pics of the Dude, Majja. We don't often get treated with shots of the Tube Master.

[#0000ff]If you get a hankerin' to wave a rod and some time to do it, give us a shout. Your schedule is probably more complicated than ours.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Wanna get our heads together and put together a targeted species list this year? I can put you on some of the stuff you might not have added to your resume yet.[/#0000ff]
