Hunters must apply for a special license in order to hunt mountain lions in most of western Montana's Region 1 and Region 2 during the winter season, Dec. 1-April 14, this year. The application deadline is Aug. 29.
General mountain lion hunting licenses, for use during the winter season in all hunting districts in central and eastern Montana's Regions 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 and a few districts in western Montana, must be purchased by Aug. 31.
During the fall season, Oct. 26-Nov. 30, hunters with a special or general mountain lion license may hunt in any open district statewide.
During the winter season, special license holders may only hunt in the district where their special license is valid.
Hunters must choose to either apply for a special mountain lion license or purchase a general mountain lion license. Unsuccessful applicants for special mountain lion licenses will not be eligible to purchase a general license.
A hunter may apply for the special mountain lion license drawing by any of the following three options:
· Apply over the counter at any FWP Regional office by 5 p.m. on Aug. 29;
· Apply online at fwp.mt.gov by 11:45 p.m. MDT, Aug. 31;
· Apply through the mail by sending an application to: Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, License Section, PO Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620. Applications must be received by Aug. 29.
A mail-in application is available for download online at the FWP website under "Hunting." A bonus point system for mountain lion license applicants begins this year.
Hunters are urged to check the mountain lion regulations available at all FWP license providers, FWP Regional offices, and online at fwp.mt.gov under "Hunting."
