terradactyl hunt (sandhill crane) 9/6/08
#1
Went hunting for sandhill cranes this morning. Walked out in the field and got set up along a fence line. Then about 1/2 hour later I had a group of 3-4 other hunters come right in on me in the same field less than 100 yards away! (Don't people have any common courtesy?) Yes, they probably all had permission to hunt there, but if I saw someone else with a flashlight in the same field, I would move somewhere else!. Anyway, I thought that having those hunters so close, might screw it up, but as the sky got lighter 3 cranes were approaching the field from the east and about a 1/4 mile away I saw one crane fold up (kinda like a lawn chair) and then I heard the gun shot. Someone was down by the Bear River hunting! About 5 minutes later a single crane flew in low over the edge of the field and I had to be patient and wait for the bird to get out of my line of fire from the other hunters who were set up in the same field with me. It was tempting to pepper those guys with BB's, but I kept my cool! Once the bird was safely past them, one shot from a 3.5" Reminton 870 Ultra-Mag folded that crane up like another lawn chair! The sound of that big bird hitting the frozen ground was like a big "woomp". Anyway, I was back at home by 7:30am! Another fun hunt! [inline DSC00003.JPG]

Nice job Scott. Let us know how you prepare that beast for the table and how it turns out. I guess there is always Merlins if it doesnt turn out.[Image: bobwink.gif]

Nice report Scott, sounds like you did good despite the problems with other hunters. How much did it weigh? I'm also curious about how it taste.
