Bison in the Book Cliffs, you heard right, they were just talking about it on Roughin' it Ourdoors. Maybe some of you have heard of this but it was the first time for me. They want to have 450 or so when the herd grows. They just released a small group from the Southern Ute tribe, the next group will come from the Henry mountains. This will be nice because we will have three places to hunt them in Utah, wow, what a deal[cool]. WH2

That is pretty cool. I wonder how many years it will be before they will be huntable?

I wish I knew Brandon, I was hoping someone else knew but I guess not. I'll give the DWR a call tomorrow and see if they have the low down.

There are already several hundred bisosn on the ute tribes property in the book cliffs. With this new release on public land you could have movement between the two groups so the population could grow fairly fast. One of the key factors in some transplants is the number of illegal kills. We have areas that moose were released in over 30 years ago but there have been so many illegal kills that those herds have never reached there potential. There have been no hunts. Hopefuully this new herd won't have too many problems and there will be some chance for harvest in the near future. Keep your fingers crossed. gshorthair

I had to make a bunch of phone calls but I finally got a hold of one of the DWR guys from the North eastern office that is in charge of the plan to establish the new herd. He said it would take 5 to 8 years. The first plant was 14 yearlings, the next will be 30 from the Henry mountains.

Well at least 2.5 places to hunt them. Out on the island I think it is like shooting a cow in a pasture. Some day I will draw for that one.
Thanks for the digging that is good info
