farmington duck hunt
#1
Me and two freinds pulled into the parking lot at 6:00 AM hoping to get out to are spot and setup before shooting started,we had alot of work ahead of use and just missed the target by about 5 min.we set up for a south wind and used a J pattern decoy spread, didn't take long until ducks where pouring into the area we where hunting.the first flock of the day was 5 widgeon, they dove in from around 300 feet cuped like little jets twisting back and forth to drop elevation fast, right to the hole we had placed some spinners in.five in two left, before we could go out to get them 2 hen mallards set in from the same direction right to the hole two shots 2 more down, hurry and run out to pick the birds up.the lighter it got the less intrested the flocks of ducks coming in had in use?we pulled the spinners spread out the decoys and we just couldn't get the birds to come to use.as usual the hundreds of coots in the middle of the pond where pulling ever flock coming in.we always had some lookers but just out of shooting range.one of the guys had to leave around noon so I ran him in.when I got back my other friend had shot two more widgens that had gotten up when I went threw the middle of the pond when heading in.around 2:00 PM the storms started really wipping up the wind and it wasn't long before the wind and rain had the ducks looking for some cover, flock after flock just swinging out of gun range had use frustrated and willing to go out and pull half the spread out, this was the ticket and they started to come in.this time10-15 gaddies droped in and three dropped.ran out to get the birds and 5 mallards busted me and flared I hate that.just then.the wind out of the south started to switch out of the west then started to blast use out of the north,of course we where set up for a south wind and the ducks again didn't want to comein over the cover and where swinging just outside the spread and landing 100 yrds out from use.so we got the spinners back out and set them out just outside the spread facing into the wind.that was the trick and we where back in the game.the bad thing is the birds would swing behind use and with 12' frag at are back we had to be quick to even get a shot.my other friend had to get out of there at 4:30 just when the weather started to turn really ducky,oh well always next time.We ended up two short of a two man limit and the other friend had got four before he left.good time for the first time out for me.I left the camera at home, sorry no pics this time.
Shoot straight guys,Don't educate the ducks and callem in close,NO SKYBUSTING PERMITTED!

Thanks TKB,it was fun, always is. I hunt an area that no other boats can get to and usally have the place to my self, and can let the birds work and circle as many times as they want before commeting,It's alot of work but do well for my efforts.
have you been able to get out?

Ya gotta love the wind. I would rather a strong wind than rain or snow. Sounded frustrating but still a blast. I've never hunted Farmington but will make it there one of these years.

yep, have to agree I would rather hunt in the wind then any other condition.three years ago I hunted in a wind on a blue bird day at Salt Creek, got 1 hen and six greenies, can't beat a 40mph wind at your back.[Wink]
