Kolob 11/12
#1
I just returned from three days in St. George. My wife had a training class and I tagged along just to get away. All I could find to do in the south was to fish. I couldn’t get away until I dropped her off every morning at 9:00. After that I had the car to do as I pleased for the remainder of the day. I checked out the community ponds down there and caught planter bows in most of them and a couple of LM in Skyline pond. I spent one afternoon catching planter bows out of Quail Creek.

On Wednesday I headed up to Kolob. As I was approaching the lake there was a terrible explosion in the back of the car. I just about went through the roof. When I finally settled down and decided that no one had shot me, I thought the float tube must have exploded due to the change in elevation. I pulled over to check the tube it was still inflated. When I lifted it up I could see that the zipper on the cover had opened up but the bladder had not ruptured. I let the air out. A new zipper and it should be as good as new.

When I got to the lake it was too cold and windy to use the tube anyway (I am a wimp.) I drove around the lake stopping to throw a fly and bubble at several different places. When I came back around to the east side I tried a spot with a very steep rocky bank. After a lot of casts I had one good sized fish follow the fly to the bank. But that was the only action I could get on the flies. Then I tried the rest of the tackle box. (Pointers, flatfish, spoons and finally a white tube jig. The first or second cast with the tube I hooked a nice fish but he didn’t hang on long. The next cast I caught a 16” rainbow. One or two casts later I caught an 18” cut. I thought that I had the secret of the lake, but no that was it. I finally gave up on that spot and moved around the lake. Nothing more until I got to the dam, where I caught a 13” rainbow and a 17” cut. I worked my across the dam and caught one more 18’ cut and 3 more 13” rainbows. After losing my second tube jig to the rocks I decided to work my way back through the tackle box. I caught 3 10” cuts. One on a kastmaster, one on a crawdad crank, and one on a fly. It was now time to head back and I took a few pics on the way down.

One thing that I forgot to mention. I was the only fisherman at Kolob. There were a few people driving around and when I went to the dam there was a guy just sitting in his truck with a small boat behind. He didn't launch and was gone when I left the lake.
